I've heard there is a short-cut from Phoenix to San Diego that takes about 5 hours or so.... can anyone tell me what it is? Thanks! And is it safe?

There's no shortcut. If you live in the North Valley, it's quicker to get to Hwy 85 and take that to the 8. If you live in the East Valley or Ahwatukee, just go to the 8.

Or fly. Takes 45 minutes.

It's almost all interstate. I just drove it over Memorial Day.

Depending on where in the valley you are leaving from, you can either take AZ-85 to I-8 at Gila Bend, or 347/84 from the east valley through Maricopa, to I-8. I've done both.

The rest of the drive is all I-8 and is mostly desert. Aside from not being a good place to get a flat tire, I guess it's as safe as any other interstate.

Driving at all posted speed limits, it takes anywhere from 5 hrs 7 min (Avondale to San Diego) to 5 hrs 40 min (Mesa) and anywhere in between. If you do a little over though, say 10 MPH, you can definitely make it into San Diego in about 5 hours...no short cuts needed.

If you're driving out of the Phoenix area, there is no other way other than than Interstate 10 west to 85 south, then to Interstate 8.
