This is all true too. Any place this big and growing has this stuff growing right alone with it. People are naive if they don't think this is part of it. The good stuff is here too, just depends, like always, how much money you come here with.
If you have enough money to avoid this, you will be fine.
But we do have it all. When you have teenagers you notice it more. lol Just keep an eye out and you'll be ok.

5 phrases to describe Phoenix (and dont say dry heat)
* Not your typical desert
* Perfect weather from mid October until late May
* Not too far from one of the world's 7 wonders, The Grand Canyon
* Plenty of shopping and dining places
* You could be in downtown Phoenix, then a 30-minute drive, you could be out in the wild desert.

Okay, I'll add one more:
* No earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, blizzards, and other natural disasters.

I guarantee you that the people on this board either are not familiar with most of the city or they live in denial. I will be willing to bet that most have rarely been west of Central where a LARGE! part of Phoenix is.

I know that if I get to indepth the thread will get closed like usual. Remember a large and I mean LARGE part of Phoenix is RUN DOWN and teaming with Illegals. I lived there for 11 years and I can tell you that this is true. the following are typical life situations in PHOENIX.
In my life there is very little draw to go to most places inside the loop 101. I joke with one of my co-workers, who lives in phoenix, that when the 101 was built they circled the problem with the area.

The most I venture into phoenix city limits is when i use the airport. Other than sky-harbor I have found nothing in phoenix that i have an interest in....

Well, at least we have one honest person on this board. He wont go inside the 101 because there isn't anything good in there. You see most of Phoenix is a run down ghetto. Now I didn't say all of it is. For example a lot of east Phoenix and North east phoenix are good as are most of the suburbs. But Phoenix? please! Most of it is not good

Summers here are hotter and just as humid as the midwest.

No neighbors sitting outside or kids playing kickball in the streets.

People trying to forget their midwest upbringings.

Nice sunsets

Saguaros are mystical, especially the ones with their arms raised up high.

I like the lizards scurrying about.

More older hippies here.

The mountains are awesome.

People here can't drive. They don't understand roundabouts.

They drive too fast.

Some good restaurants.

I moved here a month ago to Tempe, and quite frankly, hardly anything about Phoenix appeals to me. I like Tempe though and Scottsdale, so I'm pretty happy here. I can't quite put my finger on what I don't like about Phoenix, but I'll just say there is hardly anything about it that stands out, or that distinguishes it. Granted the north is pretty nice, just doesn't really appeal to me. But Central Phoenix, and the areas surrounding downtown, (I'm not even going to mention South Phoenix or west Phoenix, because every city has it's ghettoes). The majority of Phoenix is just continuous and near limitless sprawl in every direction, without much of an identity, or character whatsoever. There isn't anything wholely defining that makes you say... that's Phoenix, it's the lack of character and identidy that makes one say, that's Phoenix.

I am by no means, saying all of Phoenix is the ghetto, because that is ignorant; it's the lack of uniqueness and ubiquity that characterizes Phoenix, to me, more than anything else. I actually think the downtown is nice and looks like it can be the epitome of an interesting urban core, but it just has a ways to go. I have to agree, for the most part, with your comment. I feel as if too many who boast about Phoenix, are in actuality, boasting about the valley, as I have done in the past. I would like to see more people judge Phoenix on it's own merits. Phoenix should be judged independently and not based on it's suburbs. It should be the city that defines the suburbs, and not vice versa.

Yabba Dabba Doo!

Aren't the Cape Cod/Colonial/Victorian/Craftsman type of homes too expensive to build?

I can maybe see a custom builder putting up a home like that if the buyer's budget is no object...
