I'm not sure if you're located near it, but the best place I have found to buy groceries on the cheap is at American Discount Foods on Extension and Broadway in Mesa. It's a little bit north of Broadway. I'm not familiar with Aldi's, but American Discount Foods buys in bulk from other chain grocery stores and can sell things for 10%-50% of their regular grocery store price. Check them out if they're close enough to you and and you want to "stretch your income." You won't find better deals anywhere than you'll find there.

I've always found Trader Joe's to be fairly inexpensive and reasonable....plus, some of their policies are like Aldi since the person/group that owns Aldi Nord in Europe.

It's called Grocery Outlet, and it has always reminded me of the Aldi's I used to go to when I lived in Germany.

Another Grocery Outlet fan. It is a simple place, not enormously sized, but definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in the vicinity of 43rd Ave and Bell and want to do some frugal shopping.

Default Aldi's search!

I too am looking for Aldi's or something of the sort. There is an article online stating the are building 100 stores on the west coast including Arizona. But don't think it happened yet. I haven't found anything that would compare yet. And btw Ranch market is EXPENSIVE AS HELL! Don't go there if you're looking to save a buck.

The closest thing to Aldi's in Phoenix (with bag your own groceries and a no credit card policy) is WinCo foods. They operate massive stores (100,000 sq. foot +) versus Aldi's 10,000 - 15,000 sq. foot stores but their prices are great, their quality is good, and their selection is amazing.

Here are their local store locations.:

1967 E. Pecos Rd. Gilbert, AZ 85023 • Ph. # (480) 941-6774
STORE HOURS: OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY

5850 W Bell Road, Glendale, AZ 85308 • Ph. # (602) 298-2932
STORE HOURS: OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY

1235 S. Power Road, Mesa, AZ 85206 • Ph. # (480) 981-8046
STORE HOURS: OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY

330 W Bell Road, Phoenix, AZ 85023 • Ph. # (602) 978-2730
STORE HOURS: OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY

They are also planning stores in Surprise and Goodyear.

Between this and the farmers market I go to, it can't be beat. I like the coupons they send in the mail too. Free strawberries with no purchase minimal required? can't beat that

Winco is NOTHING like Aldi

I really, really miss my Aldi stores!!!

Part of what I love about Aldi is the SMALL stores. They have great deals and I loved their own brand of stuff. I knew exactly what to buy every week at Aldi, could get in and out in 15 minutes. Winco may be cheap but the stores are terribly organzied, I waste so much time going from one end to the other because there is no flow whatsoever. And Winco forces you to bag your own stuff right on the conveyor, your stuff getting squashed as the next customer's food comes down the line right behind yours. NOT a good experience.

Is Aldi the store where you have to "rent" the shopping carts? Visited my sister in Chicago and was dumbfounded that you had to basically rent the cart!

Yep. Its a quarter. It keeps costs down because they don't have to pay an employee to get the carts out of the lot. Each store is run by 3-4 employees on a shift. Lower payroll lower prices
