Thanks joinaz & ji603 for the reassurance.

It is definitely difficult to get a licence in UK and very expensive e.g. lessons, theory tests, and if you do not pass theory you have to pay a new fee each time and cannot take practical until then. Also in AZ easier as you can go and wait your turn for test, here you have to send for appointment which could taken 2 weeks or longer. I took my test 20 years ago and it was difficult then!

The vision part was behalf of hubby, as he has a lazy eye has glasses but does not wear as see well without.

ji603: roundabouts! My hubby says I am sad (Mrs Bucket) but I just love that show!

AZ here we come (Feb/March) just going through visa process for me & toddler.

Thanks

This is from the AZ Motor Vehicle Dept official site8) Do I have to take a test?
If you have a current out-of-state driver license in your possession, you will normally not have to take a written or road test. However, you may be required to take a written or road test any time that you apply for a license.

Google AZ Motor Vehicle Dept for all requirements and FAQ's.

It's not so bad, and besides, everyone should know how to...I mean why not? It may come in handy once in a while, it can't hurt to know...right?
same.

The thing about the driver test is what kind of tester you get. You get an ******* who isn't clear on their directions, you will fail.

Also from the UK...

We first arrived in Texas and we were able to drive on our UK licenses for 1 year. Some insurance companies would not insure us on foreign license but Allstate did. We took then took a written and driving test, it was really easy although I didn't sleep the night before!!

When we arrived in AZ we required no driving test as we already had a US license. My husband asked about adding his UK motorbike license to the AZ one but was told he would be required to take the test as the only license from another country that they recognise is Germany!

You will be able to pick up the US version of the highway code from the MVD.

When you come over try to bring proof of a continuous car insurance history, as you have no driving history within the US your are classfied in the same insurance group as a 16 year old who has just passes their test!

Good luck with your move.
