my son is 3 and I do not feel comfortable taking him to one of those chain preschools. I have heard horrible things about them from experinces and people who worked there. I currently have a sitter but she is not teaching him anything and I really think that is what needs to happen. I live in phoenix and am on a tight budget..anyone?

You could look into an in home preschool run by a retired teacher or one who is now a stay at home mom. When my son was 2 - 3 I was looking for something for him to do for a couple of hours a week that was educational, but not one of the big box daycares. I found a great women who was a teacher, but didn't want a full time job once she had kids and she set up a classroom in her house. I have to say he learned a ton and had a great time. I felt safe because he was in a home with another mom and her friend (assistant) with about 5 or 6 other kids. It was perfect until he was old enough for a traditional pre-k program. You could see if the sitter you have would do drop off/pick up and keep him while you're at work.

I'd try craigslist or the services offered in the newspaper. I'd get a background check and license check if it isn't someone you know.
