Sheriff Joe should consider some rehabilitation in his jails just like the prisons in ARIZONA need so the population will drop. Why do the citizens in Phoenix keep reelecting a sheriff that has been sued so many times. Do they not realize what that money is costing the county? He really does hype things to get the few mnutes of news ....It really is sad when the quote is siad in other parts of the U.S.A. "Oh Phx., where one goes to on vacation and leaves on probation." Something needs to change

So you are spying on people and it's o.k. in your eyes, but the government officials better not do it.
Did I get that right?
|
Obviously you do not understand the web or internet as much as you think you do.
Anytime you visit a webpage it logs info on you....PERIOD! No spying involved as it does it automatically. It is your price of admission into this website, my website, foxnews.com, espn.com. whatever...
The info is kept in logs by our servers. There are many neat programs that your Provider gives you so you can keep track of demographics of you visitors...mainly used for Selling Ads.
All this is standard and usually comes with the package you purchase...
No one has access to the files but the web masters/owners/who ever has permission to access the back end of a website. And maybe a few determined hackers...
Sheriff Joe wanted this info all the way back to 2004 from The Phoenix New Times...and he certainly is not trying to sell Ads.
Think of it this way. When you use a grocery card the info is stored (what you bought, who you are, where you live, etc.)....Now what if Sheriff Joe wanted that info so he could see if you are buying wine, beer, etc...He could build a data base and log your info in his computers so when a police officer runs your tags you name is logged as a possible drunk driver because you bought beer at an Albertsons...
Far fetched? Not really because health insurance companies have already tried it...

I never claimed to be an expert. However, I think I probaby understand more than you think I do, to be honest. I owned a domain for many years and I know what information can be tracked and the owner of the domain can see and use if they wish. However, I never used those tools. I felt it was a violation of people's privacy. You are correct it does it automatically, but you don't have to collect or view it. That is your choice.

Just to be clear, I believe there is no excuse (as far as I know - but I don't have all the facts) to request data that far back since the address was published more recently. However, I do believe the paper committed a criminal act in publishing the address information and thereby putting the sheriff and his family's life in danger. It seems to me, in an investigation to identify who might be making the death threats, certain information would be required to identify who it might be and that would include who viewed that site. It's not rocket science IMHO. I think it's paranoid to assume because they requested the information they would be "going after" those who viewed any of those pages.
My question to you was simply because of the hypocrisy. Not to defend all the requests for information.

Please explain. I have no idea how you figure I got caught with my foot in my mouth. Did you read my response completely?
It was not my intent to be spiteful either.

ONLY to a very closed (or criminal) mind, ibarrio
Granted, most of the Sheriffs and other Law Enforcement Leaders in Arizona are either rarely or never sued.
WHY? BECAUSE THEY DO NOTHING. They maintain "daycares" instead of slammers! They would prefer to tolerate crime against the citizens rather than arresting and arranging for deportation the largest criminal element in the state. They remain "low key" and "neutral" for job security.
As I have posted before . . . Arizona, as well as the entire country, would be a better place to live if there were more Sheriff Joe's.
