Talking apache junction/queen creek/cave creek/carefree

my wife and i are coming out to arizona to look for an area to relocate to someday.we are wondering which place would be the best place to relocate to apache junction, queen creek, cave creek,or carefree.we are looking for an area that has a nice downtown area with a small home town feel to it.and of course that has low crime, and near some lakes or rivers.we've been out to tucson, and didn't get a good feel for it,to big.....love to hear from someone who lives in any of the above areas......

Let me see if I can help a little:

Apache Junction: Really does not have a "downtown". AJ is a mix of old and new housing. Low crime. The nearest Lake (Canyon) is some 30 miles away (great lake btw)

Queen Creek: A farming community in Transition - homes galore there. Shopping coming. Problem with QC is the roads leading in and out - they are now being built so, if you have to go to work in the morning - you will have traffic.

Cave Creek: Does have that "small town" feel (albeit Western in nature). Lakes are nearby. Housing prices higher than the previous two areas mentioned.

Carefree: Upscale. Small town. Adjacent to Cave Creek. Short run into Scottsdale.

My advice would be to come and spend some time here - drive the various areas - get out of the car and experience them.

One area I would also suggest you look at is Gilbert. Older town. Going through some wonderful re-invention of itself. Small town feel. Yet, modern amenities. Near QC / Mesa

Good luck
