Default East versus West Coast

Just using words or short expressions, what 3 primary words would you use to describe both the West Coast and East Coast (in general, doesn't have to be weather, people, etc. related--any phrases that jump out at you)?

West Coast: laid back
East Coast: uptight

In all fairness: today's West Coast ain't what it used to be and NYC has improved greatly since 1980.

I'm curious about why this question is being asked in the Phoenix forum. Phoenix is definitely not an East Coast city, but it's not a West Coast city either. The quality of "coastalness" extends only a few hundred miles or so inland from either the Atlantic or Pacific coasts. Most of the country's land area, including Arizona, is not aligned with either coast.

See this thread for a lively discussion of the issue:

Do you consider Phoenix and/or Las Vegas "the west coast"?

I don't agree with everything said there, especially the gratuitous Phoenix-bashing by some long-distance haters, but the thread makes a good case as to why Phoenix should not be considered part of either coast.

As for the original question, I'd suggest posting it on the General U.S. board on this site -- the same board where the above thread was posted.

In all fairness: Phx is definitely more 'West Coast' culturally.

I am a Wash DC native who lived in Calif for 10 years then wound up here in Az in 1989.

Eye contact. I'm not on the coast, near Philly, but get to NYC and Jersey often. Around here people will make eye contact and acknowledge one another. It seemed less so when I was in Phoenix as if people were more uncomfortable. That is why I find uptight not aword I'd use to describe my area. I would say the east is much less materialistic and cares less about appearing wealthy when you aren't. Not many Hummers around or plastic surgery.

West Coast: Materialistic, fake, sprawl.

East Coast: Tradition, say it how it is, old money

You don't find many millionaires in Phoenix driving Volvo's or Saabs. You see plenty of that in New England.

If you like Lobsta, you got to try the Lobster Rolls @ the Raw Bar in New Seabury on the Cape.

Literally 3lbs of Lobster on the roll.
