Just like tanning outside, tanning indoors damages your skin. That's because indoor tanning devices emit ultraviolet rays. Tanning occurs when the skin produces additional pigment (coloring) to protect itself against burn from ultraviolet rays. Overexposure to these rays can cause eye injury, premature wrinkling of the skin, and light-induced skin rashes, and can increase your chances of developing skin cancer.

I was thinking the same thing. It basically comes down to vanity vs. health... period. Personally, I'm tired of seeing the news people and wannbe celebs on tv with the fakest looking tan on their face... so dark!

Tanning in moderation is the key. The problem is that some people do it in excess. The sun worshipers who spend HOURS out in the sun are frying their bodies, and are putting themselves at high risks for skin cancer. Indoor tanning can be risky if done excessively ... but it's actually a little safer in moderation because you're only in the beds for 10, 15 or 20 minutes at a time. Plus, it's a lot more comfortable than being outside because the A/C is on, and you have a choice of turning on the fans for extra cooling.
