Question for you if you have a minute...Mi Cocina Mi Pais...is this the one with the plaintain or is it yucca (!) fries? I read a review of a place in central phx that sounded so good, but not sure if it was Ecuadorian. The review mentioned a cheese tamale like item that sounded delicious and the use of some kind of cactus product. Does this sound like Mi Cocina?
Hmmm...I don't think so. But I'm really not sure as I haven't explored the whole menu, though they do have lots of items with plantains. I love yucca too - one of the reasons I love Peruvian food. Maybe it was a Peruvian restaurant. I think I read that review you mention, but I can't remember. Maybe the Peruvian menu at the Havana Cafe? Now I'm intrigued.

Thanks for that rec on Le Sans Souci - sounds wonderful. I just added it to my ever-increasing list! I really need to explore the Cave Creek and Carefree area more.

A couple of weekends ago a friend and I spent a Saturday afternoon in Cave Creek, and I really liked it. It's not too far a drive either where we live off of Happy Valley and I-17. We started with lunch at Tonto Bar and Grill. Great service from the friendly bartender Jackie, and I liked the extensive use of local ingredients in their menu. One of our apps was a creamy spread layered with Anasazi beans, tomatoes, ancho chili goat cheese with palm dates, and tomatillo relish. After lunch we stopped for a glass of wine at a new wine bar and shop called Brix Wine Spot that has only been open for a couple of weeks. We loved it - really cute spot and the owners were so welcoming and friendly, we'll definitely be back. We finished up with a cocktail at Madelyn's in Anthem. We didn't get a chance to try anything as we were meeting the husbands for dinner, but the menu looked excellent. We met the chef, and our bartender, James, was great. Well-made cocktails too - we're heading back in a couple of weeks for dinner here.

We're running errands around Scottsdale and 101 tomorrow - I'll have to check out your pizza place! And I agree about the shrimp at Hope Kee. It's one of my favorites too! I think on the menu it's called "Shrimp with Seasoned Salt and Jalapeno". I posted a pic on a local food board.

Photos from PHX - Lee Lee Market and Hope Kee (Southwest) - CHOW

Thanks again for the recs - would love to hear more

My hubby loves "Durent's" for good dinner. You know, oyster Rockefeller, salad, and good steak. His another favorite is Morton's. I'm just along for a ride, although I do love souffle at Morton's. I'm much more of a hall in the wall restaurants kinda girl. I do like "Mi Cuchina, Mi Pais". Pho Avina for Vietnamese. Pepe's Taco Villa for Mexican. Gormet House of Hong Kong or Golden Rice Express for Chinese. I did see the restaurant in LeeLee market and can't wait to try it. Sakana for sushi. King Gyro for..well, gyro. Sam's at 43rd and Union Hills for pizza. Miracle Mile for their "Straw" sandwich. Otherwise I just love cooking and eating at home.

Have any of you tried a Phillipino place at 35th Ave and Thunderbird? I heard they have great desserts there.

I live near the Chandler mall and we can't really run out of places to eat down that way. Sure, they aren't all "world class" places but we find CPK and Firebirds both common spots for simple, solid fare. There are others down here too that are more mainstream and also worthy of being a regular hang out. Some of the places listed above could be considered a bit more up scale than my Sat evening budget allows for!

On our last visit, we went to this place in Agritopia near Gilbert that was featured on Guy Fieri's show. Damned if I can't remember the name of the place, it was like a 50's style cafeteria place with orange trees out front. Santan village was nearby.

It was great though. Wife had a peanut butter and banana sandwich.
