I strongly disagree about Flagstaff being a tight-knit community. It's a very transient community, hence it's NON tight-knit. MANY people move here and then leave within a year or two because they can't make a living or they realize how incredibly expensive it is for what you actually get. People constantly coming and going makes for a very difficult town to make friends in. Few people want to form close relationships because there's a good chance one or both parties will be moving soon.

I agree 100%. I found flag to be far from tight knit.

The only jobs up in Flag are railroad jobs and working in tourist traps catering to visitors. Brush up on your waitressing skills....

I'm not KUMA, but Flagstaff gets REAL cold because of its high elevation (around 8000 feet). It's a lot like Colorado. Make sure you have no respiratory problems, b/c the altitude sickness will hit you real fast...Flag is about 3000 feet higher than Denver.

Yeah: Win the lottery. Real estate is very high there, compared to the wage you can earn at the local jobs. What most people do is live in Phoenix, then visit Flag frequently--on weekends, etc. That way, you can enjoy Flag AND have a place to live and food on the table, too.

StephPerry, if you decide to move to either cities, you're going to have to make a compromise when it comes to being able to go outside at any time of the year. Phoenix has more months, where the high temps are very comfortable than Flagstaff. I'm sure you've heard about our hot summers here, but remember, those very hot temperatures (110-115 degrees) only last for a short duration, mainly late June and July. You'll also still be able to get outside early in the morning or after the sun sets.

There's nothing wrong with Flagstaff, but you'll have to spend a long time finding a good-paying job, depending on your career preferences.

If you can deal with hot summers and a big city, I'd recommend Phoenix.

As other posters have stated; these two cities are on opposite ends of the spectum in many areas and should not really be compared to one another. I would compare/contrast Flagstaff with cities like Durango Colorado, Bishop California, or Cedar City Utah. Phoenix often gets compared to Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, etc. Having said that, they are good compliments to each other. When one is too hot or cold you can drive two hours and be in the opposite climate. Speaks volumes for the geographic diversity you get in Arizona.

Flagstaff, population wise is a bigger place than the places you mentioned. Based on population Flagstaff matches more closely with places like Santa Fe NM, Grand Junction CO, & Coeur D'Alene ID. Santa Fe & Grand Junction also provide an option to choose warmer or cooler temperatures within a 2 hr drive.

regards...Franco

Consider Tucson. My school district is in desperate need for special education teachers. Check us out at Marana Unified School District

Hey there,
I use to live around upper michigan in a town called pembine and have now lived in phoenix for almost 5 years and we are getting out in 2008.If you are like me when you say you love the outdoors, you will hate phoenix but you will love flagstaff.
Yes flag is expensive but you wont have to drive 100 miles to a lake that is clean enough to swim in without wearing a protective body suit, you can drive a little ways to hunt, fish, hike, climb, ski or just plain be at peace in the great outdoors.
All i have to say is "Go to Flag".Phoenix isnt the place for you .
