Good news for Phoenix and Valley residents:

Phoenix Crime Rates Drop

Biggest Decrease Seen In 10 Years, Police Say

PHOENIX -- The reductions in violent and property crimes for the first six months of 2008 in are the largest decreases in more than 10 years, police said on Friday.

For the first half of 2008, reported incidents of violent crime decreased overall 8.5 percent, police said. Homicides fell 25.7 percent and aggravated assaults dropped 14.2 percent.
Reported incidents of property crimes fell overall 10.4 percent, police said. Arson cases dropped 12 percent and motor vehicle thefts plunged 29 percent.

"It's great to hear the numbers that 'This crime went down, or that crime rate went down,' but what that really means to the community is that there are fewer victims out there on the street," said Chief Jack Harris of the Phoenix Police Department.

Even Maryvale is getting in on the "action," or lack thereof:
"Auto theft is down 25 percent, Homicide 18 percent, and aggravated assault 11.3 percent.
'We drive the numbers for robberies for the City of Phoenix," explained precinct commander Tim Hampton. Maryvale used to average 125 robberies a month, in the past 3-4 months Hampton says they've been able to reduce that to about 85 a month.

That means the overall rate of robberies for the city are also down.

'Our reduction impacts the entire statistical data for the entire City of Phoenix,' said Hampton."

Maryvale is Phoenix's most dangerous and violent precinct and home to the "worst" neighborhoods in the Valley.

I suspect much of what fcorrales80 stated is due to the large numbers of illegal immigrants fleeing within the last 12 months. Fewer perps and fewer victims who are afraid to come forward.

Looking at the tanking economy; if anything, crime should be increasing.

You may be right. The sweeps and the new law, along with the failing economy, are driving out the bottom of the barrel people. The illegals who have been here longer and have better fake documents, jobs, and homes are not as likely to be transient criminal types.
