Actually that part of Phoenix, black - white - mexican - they are mostly drug addicts and prostitutes, anyone not of this calibar is either stupid or brave if they live there. These people will cut your head off for $2, I know - it has happened to me.

Patricia, from what I understand, it is NOT GOOD. I went to look at a beautiful house there that was very well priced. Later on, I come to find out that the neighborhood is horrendous. I saw prostitutes there in broad daylight and that raised a red flag. After speaking with my friend who is a police officer, she told me to STAY AWAY. When I asked another police officer if S 7th and Baseline was ok, he literally said "f*** no." Another person I spoke to bought a brand new beautiful home in that area and his house was broken into the night after he moved in. I've heard similar stories for developments being built in that area. As an Arizonian put it "South Phoenix is our Compton".

Chandler, Mesa (around Dobson), and some parts of Gilbert are very nice and very reasonably priced. Try looking there for your parents.

I came across this web site: Apartments.com | Crime where you can put in a zip code and it will compare different types of crimes in that neighborhood against the national average. I hope it helps.

This is probably the funniest post I've read on these boards. "These people will cut your head off for $2, I know - it has happened to me" LOL

South Phoenix in general is not safe and is the hardcore hood. Its gangland and is control but the gangs. Anyway, the new developements along Baseline ant the base of South Mountain are usually gated and safe, but remember you do have to venture out. And it's only a matter of time before the hood takes it over.

People generally don't have much good to say about South Phoenix. Is there a definition of what South Phoenix is? South of downtown? South of the river? I've always been curious about this.

I've seen several of your posts where you state the area of Mesa around Dobson is nice. It's not. It is going downhill as is most of Mesa. I would avoid that area of Mesa unless it was only for temporary and I could easily leave. Really the only really good part of Mesa left is way out east. Most of Chandler is OK and improves as you go south. The exception is the older, original part which is pretty much the pattern in any of the cities of the Phoenix metro. Gilbert is pretty uniformly good. Another thing, south Phoenix is better than west Phoenix and especially the area of Phoenix to the SW of the downtown. The area along Baseline ain't all that bad. It certainly is no Compton. Bad is Southern and Broadway in the "streets". And it is not Compton either.
