When we first moved here from NY we found an apartment sight unseen and neighborhood unseen through a rental magazine. We had little money and 2 small children. We had no jobs when we came. My husband went down to the Union Hall and I opened the phone book and started calling places asking for work, no internet back then. That was in 1988. It was a struggle but we did it.

Check Craigslist for work and Careerbuilder.

I chose where to live based on some limited input from a few people I knew here. But the other thing I did was to go on websites and look at all of the "best of" guides and other reviews. New Times, AZCentral, EVTrib and others each do annual guides.

Being 30-something and single, some of my interests were nightlife, dining, happy hours, cool dives, etc. When you start plotting on a map the local faves in categories of interest, you start to see certain geographical clusters. That's how I ended up halfway between Tempe and Old Town Scottsdale. Now I've lived here a while, I have a lot of fave places all over the metro area, but the clustering research seemed to placed me well. For others, it might be golf, hiking, shopping at thrift stores, etc. - whatever drives your passions. Ask yourself what you really like to do in your free time and then research to see where those places are in the area.

Hopefully as you find places of interest, you'll find like-minded friends.
