Default Are APS and SRP any better than OPEC?

I just paid my Aug/Sept. bill for SRP and it was the second highest for me in 5 years of living here. This despite doing just about everything one can do to reduce consumption. I'd list what's been done to the house, to behaviour, etc. - but it would be a page long.

Somehow the rates keep going up, much faster than inflation. Both SRP and APS always seem to be asking for double digit rate increases. For some reason they've bucked the trend of a growing business being able to provide lower costs as their market has increased. And somehow APS has the largest, newest nuclear power plant in the country and still we're paying through the nose.

In any case, I've realized that I pay more for electricity each month than gasoline. It's more than the car payment. So as much as I'd like to reduce dependence on foregin oil, I have to wonder if the future electric cars won't cost more to run in AZ. Nuts!

How about you?

Would we be better of if electrical was provided by a non-profit entity?
