I will be visiting Phoenix from Ireland in the next few weeks. On a recent post, Phoenix came up as having the third highest incidence of asthma in the USA. Something that I have used and now work with is called the Buteyko Method. It is very well known in Europe and Australia and involves teaching one how to correct breating volume.
What do people in Phoenix use to help their asthma given it is so high? I would really like to know. Thanks Patrick McKeown, Ireland |

The Hospital! We have the most cases of asthma related hospital visits in the nation. I know people with asthma, everyone does, so many people have it. They use inhalers, different kind of meds. We have a lot of dust particles in our air. You can taste them when your outside on a windy day. Kinda gritty. We have allergy season all year long, no winter to knock off the growing and spreading of plants, and pollution. I don't know how the people with out asthma don't have asthma? I think I avoid it by smoking. |

I have asthma. I moved from somewhere with 4 seasons and little dust. in the 3 years i have lived here my first serious incident was 2 nights ago. It took about 4 puffs on my rescue inhaler before it was fixed. I have not needed a hospital visit since moving here. In the 4 season area i would be in once or twice a year for a breathing treatment.
For as long as i can remember my Dr told me that Az would be great for me. I read somewhere a lot of asthmatics moved here for just that reason, and thats why the high amount of people here with asthma. |

Doctors have long believed that hot and humid or hot and dry climates were preferable for people with breathing problems. I had asthma, too, but it started when I was a baby in southern California - something the doctor didn't take into consideration when telling me where to go from a 4-season state where my asthma has worsened. I couldn't breathe in AZ or NM. So it didn't work for me.

Glory be to God Patrick, we all ride camels and wear scarfs over our faces to keep from eating mouthfuls of sand on our way home from working at the "OK Coral"
I'm pretty sure your Buteyko Method will work in Arizona too...if not we have Urgent Care facilities that will make you feel better. Although you'll need to get there early to park your camel if you have rented one. Ask the doctor on call to prescribe you Advair and you should be all set. I saw the commercial on TV. |
