Default Solar attic vents on tile roofs

Has anyone put solar attic vents on tile roofs here? I would like to find out if it made a difference on the electric bill in the summer.

We put two on top of our house in Hawaii, but the roof was shingled, not tiled, and it did keep the house about 10 degrees cooler in the summer.

No help with your question, Altus.

However, I've had a Solar Powered Fan in my garage (not a tile roof) for a few years now and the results are amazing. I would recommend them to anyone, especially in the Desert Southwest.

Good Luck

You might also be able to install gable fans in your attic, shooting hot air out (but not up through the actual tile/shingles). Mine are situated at the tops ends of the roof, but face to the side/outward. This way you don't have to worry about breaking new holes in the roof.

The fans automatically kick on when the temp gets over 100 in the attic. I can almost plot the changing of the seasons by listening to when they kick on or off.

I installed a 1250cfm ceiling fan in my garage. It keeps the garage cool and plus, no need to cut holes in your roof if you have any existing venting. The fan builds positive pressure and forces the HOT air out. Works awsome.

Is the hot air leaving just the garage or the attic also?

Thanks for all the ideas.

both, it looks like a large bathroom ceiling vent/fan. Sucks the hot air out of the garage (and car motor heat.....) and blows through the entire attic.

MikeCaz

I also installed a Gable fan from Home Depot 5 years ago, but they don't work as well as the garage deal.

Idea for DIY fans:
A standard extractor fan into the roof with a hinged cover over the end of the tube like on the exhaust of a large freight truck. Stops air/water getting in/out unless the fan is on, and blows out hot air while it is on.
