And never mind the economic boost the city gets from such newcomers and snowbirds spending money on local tourist attractions, resorts, restaurants, etc. Look at what the economy is like in Phoenix right now, with the current housing/real estate crisis and nationwide economic slowdown- it isn't pretty. I find it rather amusing that the very thing these 'natives" bi**# and complain about, the influx of newcomers from colder climes who might or might not like extreme heat, is the very thing that the city's become entirely dependent upon for economic vitality. Careful what you wish for.
Very good post!

The AZ economy is getting drilled and the state will shortly be about $1B in debt due to what you have stated above...a no tech driven economy that depends on service and construction for any growth...really a weak base for the future...and pretty darn uninteresting for anybody interested in technical fields outside of semiconductor manufacturing and defense companies.

The almost complete lack of attention to gaining technology related VC dollars is a joke and a complete failure by the so called 'leaders' of this state...there are hardly any start ups and move ins from significant technically oriented companies...look at Sky Song in Scottsdale for further evidence of a govt driven joke...billed as a research 'center' for hi tech companies it really is just an office building with space for rent to almost anybody...not a whole of true design engineering or architecture work going on there...and that is the kind of work that pays very well.

Post back after a few years of enduring 90+ degree temps for 7-8 months out of the year...with 100+ of those days over 100...it WILL wear on you.
really it becomes like groundhog day (The Movie) for months every day is the same forcast, sunny and hot, sunny and hot, sunny with more hot! lol real seasons are great.

I wasn`t completely wrong. Your last sentence tells your story. It seems you are bored by the uneducated little people and the service economy so you are moving on. Behind every move because of the weather is an underlying issue. If you sold your company and have lots of coin it`s a great time to move. The depressed midwest is now a buyers market.

Frankly: a college degree unto itself does not impress me..........

NOTE: I am not referring to physicians, CPAs, engineers, etc. but for careers that 30-60 years ago that one rose through the ranks.

This country is basically going to 'hell in a handbasket' and many of the putative 'brains' that infest the boardrooms, Wall Street and so on would be better off in jail cells someplace vs. receiving their golden parachutes at the 'little peoples' expense IMHO.

Sure that is part of the story like anything else but the hot weather is just as much a part of the story as we still live in AZ just not the Valley because we couldn't handle it anymore.

As for depressed markets...AZ is worse than pretty much the rest of the country...HUGE buyers market here now.

I agree...too many people making money out there without actually designing and producing something tangible...America used to be great at designing and manufacturing products that the world would want...now we just want to 'manage' other countries doing so as a lot of this 'work' is farmed out to India and the Far East.

Fact is most people move to AZ because of cheap houses (NOT the weather) and the fact the under or uneducated can easily get jobs which dominate most of the AZ economy.[/quote]

Boy, THAT was rude...no matter what part of the country you live in. Yes, part of the reason we moved here was because it's more affordable than the $12,000 a year property taxes we were paying in NJ but we are certainly not "under" or "uneducated". We both have college degrees and one of us is an attorney. More affordability means having to work less which means more time as a family which means a better home life. We happen to enjoy the weather here so far (and yes, we are aware that it is the DESERT) compared to the depressing gray Jersey winters. To each his own on that front, but not everyone, or even "most people" who move here are uneducated or under-educated.

Hereford/SV area has arguably the best overall weather here in Arizona. A touch of winter but mild (85-90F @ 20% humidity) summers.

Phoenix weather is only truly hot for 5 months, then for the rest of the year its really nice. Heat is what you get if you love the sun. (Unless you live in S.California. Then you get awesome weather with the same sun) lol
