Detroit's troubles

The past year was especially rough for American automakers as consumers shunned the fuel-thirsty SUVs in their fleets for smaller, more efficient models.

General Motors advertises that it builds 19 cars that get more than 30 mpg on the highway, but that's a relatively low percentage of its fleet, and we have found that even non-SUVs from Detroit tend to have among the worst fuel economy in their class. The domestics don't have any competitive small SUVs or small cars. Overall, the Detroit automakers build just 19 percent of our Recommended vehicles.

There is some good news: New models from GM now rank among the best in our testing, although overall reliability, even among some of the new models, still lags behind most of the competition. GM models that score well in our tests include the Buick Enclave, Cadillac CTS, Chevrolet Corvette, Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, Pontiac G8, and Saturn Outlook.

In reliability, some Ford models now rival their competitors from Honda and Toyota. But in our testing, Ford vehicles aren't always among the best performers. Although the Flex and F-150 pickup are high points, most models from Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln rate only midpack in our Ratings. Still, the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan are being updated, and a new Ford Taurus is on its way this summer.

Chrysler is at the bottom of the class, with a drop in its overall score and average reliability rating. Most models from the manufacturer have noisy, inefficient, unrefined powertrains; subpar interiors; and poor visibility. Chrysler is the only automaker with no models on our Recommended list. But the redesigned and much improved Dodge Ram pickup offers a glimmer of hope. Our tests show it now competes well with the best full-sized pickups.

For more information on how the big three fare, see our Detroit report cards.

Car brands reviewed by Consumer Reports
Three quick notes here:

#1: the differences in quality between, say Porsche and Chevrolet are very slight and if the former vehicle breaks down---------you are 'screwed' for the most part.

#2: despite their best attempts: the Asians have never been able to break the 'grip' of the Detroit 3 where fullsized trucks are concerned-------and, even for small trucks, Toyota and Nissan are struggling as of late.

#3: why people buy the 2007+ Toyota Camry is beyond me; not only it is hideous, its interior is cheesy as well.

They converted the Target on 7th St and Bell to a Super-Target, they sent out a ton of coupons so I gave them a shot, the only problem is I could not find half the stuff I needed, and they did not have any store-brand foods, it's not like bread tastes any better because you paid twice the price.

Walmart has everything, and price-matches EVERY other grocery store, so you really have no reason to shop anywhere else.

We shop Target and Walmart - although we generally do not do that much food shopping at Walmart. It has been our experience that their meats and produce are not always the freshest. For meats and produce we shop at Basha's mostly. For large quantities of especially meat, Costco is our store!

If you don't mind frozen chicken, the Walmart brand is actually great when it comes to breast size and amount of fat. I typically get my beef from a kosher butcher near downtown, even though I am not muslim/jewish, I prefer the fine cuts and low prices, nothing beats a good ribeye IMO.

I do agree with the produce being an issue, even I typically don't eat many vegetables I still like to get fresh items.

I love Target much more as well. Never shop at Wal-Mart as they have become un-American and socialist, LOL! Not really, but really. Target also just feels cleaner from the parking lot to the entire store. Better feeling when shopping at Target and I never get asked to buy tamales in the parking lots of Target stores NOR do I accidentally kick a bag with a dirty diaper in it. For some reason Wal-Mart attracts those that don't really care about their property or others.

Target seems to attract a different customer base, those who want to feel hip/modern and don't mind paying more for the same item.

Walmart attracts those looking to save a few bucks, so you get the low-income crowd who can't afford to shop at target.

I prefer Target for many of the reasons above. The problem is that Target selection is not the greatest and I end up having to go to Walmart anyway for what I need. However, I have seen it in some places(smaller towns) where Walmart leaves their old building and then builds a bigger building in a totally different area. Then the old store site stays vacant for years as no one can afford to buy it from them. It becomes an eyesore. BTW, last year we were in Minneapolis and there was a multi-storied Target right downtown. That is their headquarters.

Yep, Target's corporate headquarters is in Minneapolis; hence the Target Center in Minneapolis.
