Default Salons in this economy....

Will people, in particular...women, stop getting their hair done in this bad economy? I wonder which business will NOT be affected. Seems people are still eating out these days, and going to the movies. I saw a movie last week....I actually haven't done that in 2 years. Any thoughts??? Particularly the hair question....

I think a lot of people like to drink heavily during recessions. I know I do. The saloons will do OK.

Department stores and boutiques will suffer. Some restaurants will go out but most should survive. Movies actually do better during recessions for some reason.

I was wondering this same thing myself. It seems as if there is a salon or nail place on every corner. I had my hair done recently and it was $195 and I wondered who can afford that? I won't make it a priority and won't be going back. That is just too much money and it was not a particularly luxurious place..........nice, but somewhat average.

Its being said that service jobs such as hair dressers will suffer, The prices are so insane anyway in salons other then great clips, Arizona hair company type places, that are cheap. I hate to admit what my tab is for cut, style and color I know I will be going less. In between I will have to color my own roots to stretch out the visits. As for movies, wow they are terribly expensive, theres more renting going on in this market, things that provide cheap entertainment are doing well right now, McDonalds has been doing well, lol, people are turning to their dollar menu so says the news. I just heard from a friend in Ohio that two major malls, one that was really upscale are fileing bankruptcy. That was a shock, thats like the same news as Scottsdale fashion Square fileing.

I have a friend that works at a beauty salon in Scottsdale and business is off 50%.

The folks who want to spend big on hair, clothes, etc will continue to do so. The people who want bargains on such goods and services will continue to do so.

It's the businesses with most of their customers in the middle that are taking hits, because when feeling pinched, the middle will shift towards better deals over loyalty. Mervyn's is a classic example. Not discount. Not high end. When people started watching their wallets, they decided to hit WalMart, etc. for bath towels and pillow cases.

So while I'd never pay a fortune for a haircut, there are those who wouldn't dream of going to Supercuts. The high end and value places will survive. It's the places catering to the "either or" consumers who are most challenged right now.

Either had I until the other day. I had a cut, roots colored and a handful of highlights (plus tip). I was a bit shocked when they told me the price. I didn't expect it to be inexpensive, but not that much money.

Some people need it done for work. Not everybody is handy with their own hair, those people will still go but try to find a cheaper place and go less often. That being said, going to a movie or a fun night out with the kids during these times when "we can't get that because of this economy" comes after every sentence you say to yourself and your kids it's nice to take a break every once in a while from the dread and take everyone out to a movie and forget this mess for a couple of hours. It's so stressful!

I hope people get a hair cut or two and go to the movies a little, try and not worry so much about everything. The worry is what keeps us all in a down swing. Panic is what got us here in the first place. And I don't know if you've noticed but everything is closing around us lately, that is a little freaky.
