In London we have the underground (tube) and the amount of people in this picture is quite normal for rush hour. Can be worse depending on what tube line you are travelling on.

Cannot wait to ride when we get there.

Unfortunately, most people seemed to do exactly that: ride from one end to the other. That meant people trying to board anywhere in between found themselves faced with packed trains, and long waits even to ride a few blocks. There were overflow buses specifically provided to get people to other spots along the line if they couldn't manage to board the train, but since the whole point for most people was to ride the new rail, it wasn't appealing to anyone but those in a big hurry.

After my volunteer shift was up I did manage to squeeze onto a train just to go from one stop to the next, but of course it wasn't particularly comfortable. Once the novelty has passed (and especially once the ride ceases to be free), the whole experience should be a lot more civilized and convenient.

Oh, and by the way: the trains will not only be free until the end of the year, but they will be running until 2:30 a.m. on New Year's Eve.

Mandatory Wikipedia link: METRO Light Rail

So, yaay, the 5% of Phoenix residents who don't drive can now travel along a straight line at the mind-blowing speed of 25 MPH at a tax-victim-subsidized price that could have been used to purchase a higher quantity of electric buses that can go faster and cover more flexible routes... I hope the rail gods of your socialist faith are pleased.

Well, I can only say this....

Thanks to the tax payers of Arizona, can you ride this train. It wasn't because our great and wonderful senator McCain brought pork into the state to help build this pig.

Which brings me to another question for you.....

Why do we pay a man the money we do to help our state, when he goes around the country every two years, bragging about how he get paid money not to bring home any pork for his state?

And we pay this guy? What are we stupid or something!

Where can I get a job like this? Tell the tax payers that I'm your man to represent you in Washington, then turn around and not represent you. Wow what a deal.

I can wait to vote for him in the next two years. It's kind of funny don't you think?

Oh, by the way....

Who was taking care of the states problems in the last two years while this guy was on campaign? Did you see Illegal immigration go down in the last two years while he was making his rounds around the country?

If it did, it was because of Sheriff Joe, not McCain.

Well, I am given to socialism and all I can say is...this thread alone inspired me to go buy three Sunday newspapers to start packing up my things to leave. Honest to God...I'll start with the walls...

I'm confused by the last two posts here. The first seems to assume that I'm a McCain supporter - LOL. The second - huh?

The light rail is a nice idea, but honestly, how many people can even ride it at this point? Most poeple who do not work in that part of the town will never use it, it's a nice idea, but I doubt it will get more riders than the bus got for that route.

While pleasant and cute and somewhat reminiscent of a real city, it's a stupid idea. I work on Central Ave, hence I think it's kind of cute and I find myself nostalgic for real cities with real subways. In this particular case, just dumb. This suburb goes on for miles and miles. People could/can take the light rail and still have to walk miles to get to their destination. And the reaction to it is what inspired me to buy three newspapers (all they had) to start packing up my stuff to leave, to address another poster's confusion.

When this is what passes for excitement, I am in deep doodoo. No offense to anyone in this thread, just the greater mentality at large.
