Fatal crashes in Phoenix down 29 percent

Well...let's hear the argument against this.

They are saying that less people are driving vs the same time period last year, Sept. 26 and Dec. 16...which is true, but are people driving 29% less? Highly doubtful.
All crashes are down 10% and maybe that is more inline with how much people are driving less and it would make sense that the remaining crashes are not as severe due to lower speeds.

Oh yea, and for everyone that says the cameras cause more crashes then they prevent...according to DPS there has not been one crash caused by the speed cameras.

I think less people driving is more of an effect of the economy.

That is interesting..........

Although in all fairness: a 75 MPH speed limit on a rural freeway with a 10 MPH cushion prior to the camera flashing is actually quite lenient.

Accident rates are down because the ratio of licensed drivers to unlicensed is up. Unlicensed drivers have been removed from the roads in large numbers due to the economy and the latest laws allowing impounding of vehicles when driven by people with no valid driver's license.

ARS 28-3511

Fewer unlicensed drivers = fewer DUIs, accidents, and a lower percentage of uninsured drivers...

I guess the state of AZ has stooped to logical fallacies to support draining more money out of taxpayer's wallets. No wonder AZ is at the bottom of the educational charts in the US. They fail to even teach basic science and logic!

Specious reasoning:

plausible but false; "specious reasoning"; "the spurious
inferences from obsolescent notions of causality"-

Correlation does not imply causation is a phrase used in the sciences and the statistics
to emphasize that correlation between two variables does not imply that one causes the other.
Its negation, correlation proves causation, is a logical fallacy by which two events that
occur together are claimed to have a cause-and-effect relationship

I'm going to guess that by unlicensed drivers you mean to say illegal immigrants, correct?

While illegal immigration has dropped, that wouldn't explain why fatal accidents have dropped by about 3X. If it was simply about less drivers, then the drop should be similar between the number of total accidents and the number of fatal accidents, no?

Additionally, just because someone does not have a AZ driver's license does not mean they never had a license in another country and therefore cannot drive. Hell they may know how to drive better then a person licensed here since a child could basically get their license in the US it's so easy.

Very valid and seldom mentioned point.

Sure... Next they'll show you a "study" how effective the cameras yelling at you are! Heck, I'm sure London must've already come up with such a "study"! HX_Guy, did you forget where you're from (oh, yeah, I take it you studied history, too, unlike many others) and do you not smell the crap when it's under your very nose?!

I don't know for a fact, but I assume these statistics are available somewhere. Do you really think they would skew the data?

How many of these permanent speed cameras are in place on the highways? I just drove all over and didn't see any, but am not sure of the scheduled installation.
