Default magnet school system

Hi,

Could someone explain to me how the magnet school system works in Arizona? My younger siblings who are in 6th and 5th grade recently moved to Gilbert and have been placed in the regular public school system. They don't enjoy it very much, so I'd like to learn more about the magnet school system. I'm not in the area, so I'm really relying on this forum for a starting point. Are the magnet schools based on academic performance or a lottery system based on geographic location? Any recommendations on which school is best? Thanks!
