We also know what kind of truck you drive, so you're not that hidden amongst other MI plates.
surely you all have better things to do but worry about out of state plates?

Default I did not register for a very long time after I moved here

one reason, I had one foot out the door the first several months. I did get followed around a little, police would tail me then dissapear, once at school I was parked to wait on my kid and I was getting something out of my trunk, I looked up and there was a police car sitting in the lot watchng me, when he saw me pull out my California Duster and start to clean to kill time, he was relieved and soon left, lol. it depends i think on how threatening you look. Also, I do believe if i remmeber correct you can still register online from your home state for a one year renewal, even being in another state, I mean what do you think college kids do when they take their car to another state for school, most keep registered in the home state. There are some loop holes and options.

Loop holes and options? Nope, there are none!
What do you think this is, a murder trial with a celebrity as the main suspect? There are no loop holes, the same law applies to everyone...lol

Including AZ, in each state, DMV.org set certain conditions, if any applies to you, you will be required to register your car in that state, cut and dry.

That wasn't quite my point. It's the drivers and the attitudes that comes with out of state people. Many come here and make like it's their home they just moved from. Some complain about how az isn't like where they are from so it's bad.

Here is an interesting situation say you are an Arizona Resident and go to a local University and have out of state parents (California) but they visit quite often and stay for months at a time. If you drive your parents car around all the time and don't have your own personal car and are also included on their insurance policy to be a driver. Is driving their car with California plates with an Arizona License illegal?

Within weeks of our moving here and changing over to AZ insurance coverage, my husband and I both received letters from the CA DMV citing that they were aware we were no longer insured in the state of CA, and thus our CA auto registrations would be suspended. The suspensions were set to go into effect about a month after the dates on the letters, or just about a total of 6 weeks after we'd moved.
You are referring to a new law in California (January 2007) that requires insurance companies to report to the DMV whenever any driver with the mandatory liability insurance removes that liability insurance from their policy... even if it's a temporary removal (say, when you go on vacation for an extended period). The DMV, thus, requires the owner to file a non-op or register the vehicle in another state if that's what they are intending. It's another way to help get uninsured motorists off the CA road. Of course, if a motorist never files for insurance or registers their vehicle in the first place, then that doesn't stop them from driving the roads. There's still plenty of uninsured motorists out there. So many ways around it.

Do you pay 'non-resident' tuition fees for your university or do you pay school tuition fees at the same rate as an Arizona resident? It sounds like you do have a AZ driver's license now, so if you own a vehicle, have an Arizona driver's license or pay tuition the same as residents in AZ, then State law requires that you obtain registration immediately on your vehicle. Btw, an out of state student enrolled with seven or more semester hours is not considered a resident, even if they are employed in AZ.

However, you say your parents are visiting you for a few months at a time. It's their vehicle. And you drive it while they are there. State law indicates that a driver's license and registration is required if any person remains in Arizona for a total of 7 months or more during any calendar year, regardless of permanent residence. This is what I got from the AZ Dept. of Transportation and from previous posts just in this thread.

If you are on their insurance and the insurance company knows that you are attending the university out of your own state, then I imagine there isn't any problem there. It's an easy call to your parents and to the insurance company. But if you have a legal driver's license, no one can prevent you from driving a car with out of state plates that is in AZ temporarily and owned by someone else that's properly insured.

Ultimately, if the car will remain in the state of AZ for the period outlined above and stays with you for the period of time, perhaps years, in AZ, they're gonna want it registered there in AZ.

The AZDOT has a website for people with nothing better to do, to turn you in.

Of course, they'd have to actually prove it, but that's not all that hard to prove residence... unless you have a residence in the state that your vehicle is licensed in. My license and vehicle registration aren't from the same state, but I have two houses and I'm definitely not going to re-license myself and my cars every time I make a drive back and forth with a different car (which, if you read the letter of the law, you would be required to do).

Also I think you typically get a 3 day warning ticket. Probably a bit of it depends on the officer; I think they have some discretion.

I saw a few other posts... there are some significant tax advantages to living in this area, so the vehicle registration tax--all things considered--is a wash.

I'll be moving soon, and I will keep my out of state plates for the full time that I can (renewing just before I move). I'll be working in Arizona and I'll be paying out of state tuition so go ahead and narc on me, make me waste my time because you think you know my situation. I am an Arizona native but I sure hate the police state mentality that seems to have been fostered here recently.
