Japanese Palms are beautiful. I don't about any difference in watering but when they mature they have enormous crowns that create lots of shade.

Lots to choose from but I advise staying away from the Queen Palm if you're new to this. They're a bit tempermental.

Almost every single queen palm I've seen looks yellow, and on the verge of dying. As someone has said, they are either hard to care for, cheap, or not suited to desert living.

Agreed. Fast grower, look nice, little to no water. Only problem is old fronds need to be trimmed and they turn into telephone poles with green tops in about 20 years. So you have to plan to cut them down eventually and use them in groupings of different ages.
