Dog Licenses - Maricopa County
We received a paper in the mail saying that all dogs in Maricopa County must have rabies shots and be licensed. Fail to license your dog will have penalties such as $2-$4 per month and you can be charged with a class 2 misdemeanor.
I am not arguing about the rabies... but is this true about having to license your dog?

Yes this is normal. Everywhere I've lived I've had to license my dogs with the county. Usually registration is done through local city government and you recieve county registration tags. You have to provide your vet's license number and proof of current rabies vaccinations to get a license. The penalty here for failure to license is actually quite small compared to other counties I've lived in.

It is absolutely true. Many aren't licensed (or vaccinated, for that matter). If one can afford proper vet care and vaccinations for a dog, they can afford the low licensing fee (it is higher if your dog is not spayed/neutered).

And If they can't afford proper vet care and vaccinations they shouldn't have a pet in the first place...

Okay thanks! It is only like $16-40 for the licence fee, I just didn't know if this was something that was necessary or not.

You can register your dogs online as well. There should be a URL in the letter you received.

The cost is so low, there is no reason not to get your dog properly licensed. This is especially important if you are going to take your dog out in public on walks, etc. While walking my dog, I have been approached by both a police officer and animal control and asked to show them the current license tag.
