Default What plants grow good in Arizona?

Hello,
I have lived in AZ for about 2 years and cant quite figure out what type of outdoor plants are good here. Between the heat, me and my dogs (who seem to eat plants), I haven't had any luck. I grew up in Washington State and everything, even what you didn't want to grow, grew without any problems.

Right now I would like to find plants to put into pots in hope they will be high enough so my dogs wont eat them. I have been to a few nursery's but with my luck, no one has been that helpful. I would love some type of flowers for their color on my porch.

I am open to any and all suggestions! Thanks!
