I'm looking to move an orange tree from one area of the yard to another area - so there wouldn't be any amount of time that the tree roots would be exposed (longer than the time to actually move it). It's a decent size tree - not enormous (I think at the tallest point it's about 6 ft) but it's a good orange producer. Has anyone moved a fruit tree successfully and not had the tree die afterwards from the shock?

We're actually looking to also take out a few plants and need weed removal (a new house we're moving into so nobody has been taking care of it for a few months). Anyone have a good company that they can do one-time yard clean-up, removal and planting, as well as transplanting a tree? If anyone has any recommendations on how I could find someone, I'd appreciate it!!!

I'm in the West Valley...

Thanks!!

You may need an expert to transplant that tree that you don't need for a one time yard cleanup. I'd talk to some tree companies (I DON'T recommend Design Tree Maintenance, BTW) about your tree transplant-- there are any number of folks, including the ones that leave cards on your doorstep, who will do a great job on the cleanup part, for a reasonable price.

Orange trees have a tap root that goes straight down. If you cut it the tree will die. I worked for a citrus nursery a long time ago and they used a balling machine to take young trees out of the ground. Also, we found out if the truck delivering the tree went over 30 miles an hour the tree would eventually die because the wind evaporated water from the leaves faster than the roots could replace it.
