Why is the Tempe car dealer charging me a 2% sales tax if the vehicle will be registered in Montana? They acknowledge that no State tax will be collected but why the city tax? This just doesn't sound right...

Frankly, paying the city sales tax at the point of purchase sounds entirely fair to me, just as if you'd walked into a store there and bought something you weren't going to use until you got to Montana (or some other state).

I suspect an auto dealer in MT (or in any other city with a city sales tax) would do the same if the reverse were true.

another option as informed by a car dealer is making the drive to Blythe California to hand over the vehicle there- no taxes payable.

I'd be interested to see that form (can't open it on the computer I'm on right now) I don't think the State DOR has anything to do with waiving a CITY sales tax.

Be careful in thinking you're getting a lower tax rate. My wife bought a car at Scottsdale BMW. It was sort of an impulse buy, so it's not like she was shopping dealers or cared about the tax. But because that dealership is on the west side of Scottsdale Rd., it's technically Phoenix, so the higher sales tax applies. If you really want the lower sales tax in Scottsdale, make sure that's the address of where you buy. Better yet, buy private party used and avoid sales tax altogether. I'll never ever buy a new car. Let someone else eat the taxes and depreciation.

+1

The tax is nothing compared to the 30% hit you take when you drive it off the lot.

I think my next ride might come from the "Bubble King"...

In many states the tax is based on the buyer's home address. That also makes it a level playing field for the dealers in price matching because the out the door price is taxed the same.

I can't believe they haven't closed the sales tax exemption loophole for private party sales yet, but I'll take for as long as I can. Just heard yesterday that my folks may not be allowed back to their house in NJ for months. So they're coming here for Xmas. They may buy a beater minivan to drive around here for a month and then I'll sell it for them when they leave. Wife and I only have two small cars and my motorcycle. It could be cheaper to buy and sell than to rent for several weeks or a month.
