Default McCain shortchanging Arizona

McCain's hard stance on earmarks leaves Az at a disadvantage when applying for funding for public works projects. His personal conviction may be genuine but his refusal to participate in the current system and apply for funds is likely costing the state billions of dollars that could be used for legitimate projects that create jobs and improve the quality of life for the citizens of Arizona. Alabama, Mississippi, Alaska and several other states are receiving nearly twice as much in federal funds as they pay in. That extra money to those states comes from other states paying more and receiving substantially less back than they send to Washington DC..

His, and others', overly restrictive definition of "earmark" or "pork" cuts out some real projects that have real benefit to the citizens of this state or whichever other states are involved.

If the economy, especially the Arizona economy, was not so extremely horrible right now then sure....if money is going to go anywhere in this state it should be to school districts and the last time I checked....none of those earmarks were for public education.

I agree. Earmarks have become a primary mechanism for returning money taken from taxpayers back to the states. Projects are not, by definition, "pork". Many are worthwhile. Arizona (well McCain) is punishing itself for misplaced principle.

I think its obvious, especially after the 2008 election, that McCain doesn't really give a damn about Arizona.

Let's wake up and smell the morning coffee, Gang . . . McCain has been "shortchanging" Arizona for years, possibly decades!

Heck, he has done more for the Illegals and Mexico than he has for the citizens of Arizona.

! ! ! ! ! !

I hate to be the contrarian here (no, actually I'm ok with it) but I think any government-funded project/earmark is an inefficient allocation of capital which could be better allocated by individuals and businesses if that money had been left with them to begin with. This really isn't opinion in that it is proven time and time again in widely accepted economic theory.

The problem with our current situtation is that everyone views politics/government as what is best for "me me me me" rather that what is best for the country. I reside in Las Vegas and if I were self-interested, I would vote for Harry Reid since he has the capabliity of bringing home pork projects that could trickle down to my pocket book. I do not vote for or support Mr. Reid because I think his world view is bad for our country.

I despise John McSame, even though I'm a hardcore Rep. (Ooops, should I be saying or writing that out loud???)

Excellent point, Dano.

Obviously there are far too many "first person singular" politicians with a personal and selfish agenda in Washington nowadays.
