Hmmm, what I find most interesting about this whole thread, is the concept that someone actually takes the time to post a thread in defense of Phoenix. I betcha this doesn't happen in the other forums.

This just leads me to wonder why...who are these people who take the time to defend Phoenix? Now, I can understand a bashing Phoenix thread, as it does provide some outlet for pent up aggression (whether correctly directed or not, it can be cathartic and it beats kicking the dog or the wife). But if someone is just happy with something, they have no reason to defend it. In fact, they like it so much they realize that this is an hour of their life they'll never get back and they could be hiking those brown rocks instead of wasting time here to defend a place wherein, in all reality, no more people should move to, as we are in danger of losing our most basic resource -- water.

I always wonder -- why do people encourage people to move here? Just typical Bush voters who vote against their own best interests? Misery loves company?

Nah-- I am much more likely to defend something I love than complain about something I don't. I guess it's just a matter of personality.

Sometimes it is the difference between those who take the time to decry lack of service or quality, and those who take the time to write letters of praise when things are done well.

Be that as it may, the reality is that this area needs no more influx of people. I just read today they're running out of water in Camp Verde(?) and Apache Junction at some new developments. This place needs to lose people, not gain people. That's why I don't understand taking the time to defend a place that is overcrowded and racked with crime, not to mention a giant strip mall, at all. I can only think Bush voter or buyer's remorse (an attempt to relieve cognitive dissonance).

Oh well, take heart, there will soon (fingers crossed) be one less person in this valley (me).

Well, I'm neither of those things-- but I understand that not everybody likes it here. I am sure there are things you like that I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole; it doesn't make me think there must be something wrong with you, I just figure that's part of what makes life interesting.

I think a site like this is good for asking questions, addressing specific issues, getting to hear a few different ideas, etc but personally I would never base my decision of where to live on the postings of an internet forum. I would hope that people would be thorough enough in their research to take the time to visit, rent, whatever, find things out for themselves rather than rely on the opinions of anonymous strangers. I spent many years planning my move and getting to know the area-- of course it changed many times over that period, but then again so did my home state.

In short, anyone who moves here because I wrote on the internet that it's a nice place is, well, kind of dumb. I think that is one thing you and I can agree on.

Good luck wherever you end up

Yes, but I also think this forum is invaluable. I was able to cross NC off my list in less than five minutes and it saved me from actually having to go there!

Also, I've been in the WA forum and gotten the scoop on where it's sunniest, etc. People told me not to live in X section, as it's Y whatever.

This forum saves people a lot of time and trouble. I haven't quite resorted to finding a soul mate on the Net (nor do I ever think I will), but I think it's just fabulous for sharing information quickly and hopefully prevents people from making HUGE mistakes or helps guide them to their best PERFECT match.

Oh, I agree completely! It is great that something like this exists. Can you imagine trying to explain this concept to somebody 15 years ago?

Sorry to get off the subject-- looking at the forecast, I am betting we'll have a lot more anti-AZ posts coming up soon LOL

I haven't read this thread since I last posted, too much to read, but ... some of my thoughts:

Making generalizations about Phoenix is dumb. It's a huge area, and the different sections are very different. You can drive 10 or 20 miles and it's like you're in another state. I lived in two different areas of Scottsdale, north and south, and HATED it. I mean really hated it - nasty, rude, obnoxious people. I've also lived in two different areas of Phoenix - Arcadia and north-central - and really loved them both. Great people, upbeat, etc., and it was easy to forget that Scottsdale even existed.

So, instead of saying I'm "for" or "against" Phoenix, I just wanted to point out that people shouldn't make decisions based on generalizations about the area. Well, except the weather, that's the same throughout the Valley! Yes, I left and moved out of state earlier this year, but wanted to point out that while I hated some of the places I lived, I have very fond memories of others.

I think it's due to a rare disease recently identified by the AMA. It causes one to automatically wish to ban anything and everything. So far mayors Mary Manross of Scottsdale, and Michael Bloomberg of NYC, have been identified as victims of this bizarre malady.

Well, I don't like any of it, so I guess I can make a comment on it, as I've been to all of the parts of this metropolis. And let's face it, it's really NOT that different from one street to the next. It's still just as hot, and there are still strip malls of every corner. But to each his own.

I've also been to Newport Beach and that's nicer than anything here, which is probably why you live there?

Yep, of course, but if I couldn't afford this I'd still be in Arcadia
I agree that there are certain negatives about Phoenix that are present everywhere, but overall I really enjoyed living in that area. Other than having the rude PV snobs nearby and in our stores and restaurants, it was great.
