30 minute commute isn't that much around here, so if it sounds bad to you, you will have to move closer to work. Take a look at the suggestions above and see if you like the areas.

In am/pm traffic I am guessing it would be at least a 45 minute to a one hour commute each way from my house in Gilbert to Pima and 101. The area in N. Scottsdale that you are refering to is a nice area. Just north of that area there is a lot of new development, so I'm sure you could find a nice community there. Unfortunately, I'm not in that area much so I don't have any specific information. In Gilbert there is the Gilbert Youth Soccer Association (http://azgysa.com/) and the Gilbert Soccer Club (http://www.gilbertsoccerclub.org/) (broken link). I hope this helps. Feel free to PM me if you'd like. My husband, myself, and our two children recently relocated from out of state, as well. ![]() |

I misunderstood. Thought your husband's office was in Gilbert. Yes, the commute would be horrible. Gilbert is a nice affordable community, in fact safer than Scottsdale. Scottsdale is safe and nice; however, for $400,000 you could buy a condo. Houses are expensive in that area from 600k range. North Pheonix/desert ridge you could find more affordable - but slightly. Gilbert is by far more affordable. Check out both communities and compare...see what you can handle.

Anyone know about how long a commute it would be from Rio Verde Dr in 85262 to Downtown Scottsdale?
Thanks |

A 30 minute commute is nothing around here, N. Scottsdale to Gilbert would take the better part of an hour. Another option would be Chandler (close to Gilbert). It's another great, family-friendly city that has attracted many professionals who don't want to pay the prices of Scottsdale. $400K in each of those 2 cities would buy you a nice home (probably not a huge one though). I misunderstood the poster; I thought he was working in Gilbert. Tempe to Scottsdale is a better commute than Gilbert to Scottsdale. Tempe would be a good option as $400K could get you a fairly large home possibly on a cul-de-sac. The commute would still be fairly long but I guess we all have to make sacrifices. |

If you're at the Scottsdale/Rio Verde border (roughly 13XXX east), you're looking at 15-20 minutes just to get to Loop 101, and then 15-20 minutes from there to downtown Scottsdale - in no traffic. If you're down toward the 16Xth streets, add another 5 minutes or so. And if you're on a dirt road...add more ![]() Another note on Rio Verde...it's very wild wild west out there still...not a lot of services. Unless something's changed in the last 8 months, you need to go to Pinnacle Peak and Pima to grocery shop. Also look carefully into the water services they're bringing out there to any houses you're looking at. There was a huge issue over water going on. If you look to buy in Rio Verde, it is imperative that you have a realtor who is very familiar with what's going on out there. I've seen some people make some very bad choices out there because their realtors don't really get what's happening out there with easements, road paving, water, wells, septic and the like. I agree Scottsdale is a beautiful area. I like it. The cost of living in Scottsdale is significantly higher than most of the surrounding areas and a lot of the people in Scottsdale have money. (i.e. "Snottsdale") It is somewhat trendy with clubs, restaurants, upscale shopping, etc. I think a lot of people knock it because they can't afford to live it. I also think that in general there is a different kind of population in Scottsdale. There a lot of late 30's, 40's, 50- somethings who are educated, career-oriented, and without young children. (Compared to Gilbert or other areas that are mostly young-children family oriented.) Anyway, that's what I have observed. I don't have any statistics, just my opinion. |

There's no real wealth in Scottsdale, just a bunch of phonies living on maxed-out credit cards pretending to be rich. Everyone is rude thanks to day after day of being chased by bill collectors. I'd be rude too if I were in that situation.
I just moved from Scottsdale to Newport Beach so please, please do not say "you hate Scottsdale because you can't afford it." Quite the opposite. |
