I lived/loved the NW suburbs as well. I loved the proximity to the city, yet the distance from it as well. I recently moved to Charlotte and love it here too. Good luck and I think you'll do fine
Hey just personal exprience of a Chicago transplant. They lived in Glendale she also bitched about the commute to downtown. Always bitched aboutt he weather. Hated that all her neighbors were not empty foreclosed houses and the renters where bringing the neighborhood down. So the first chance they got the bolted.

I suppose I understand that person's lifestyle needs. Seems different than ours though. We love proximity to any downtown area, but don't need to BE downtown for any reason other than social/recreational. And no matter what metro area you live close to, you just have to remember it's still a metro area...so there WILL be people, they WILL have cars, and there WILL be traffic. If you can't handle that, you shouldn't live in PHX, Chicago or any other urban/suburban area.

Commute to the airport is probably more important in our case since we do travel quite a bit. And not sure how ANYBODY from Chicago could complain about heat. If they'd prefer the sub-zero temps 5 months a year, that's their choice. Some people just cannot be happy/content. Given that my wife and I are warm weather people who prefer to be outdoors and closer to younger folks/families, I'm thinking this person's experience does not reflect our own nor the majority of relo'ed Chicagoans. But who knows. Interesting experience/example nonetheless and thanks for sharing!

If you move to Phoenix and you're not from California, you're probably from somewhere in Chicagoland

We moved to Surprise from northwest Indiana in mid December. My wife and I both grew up in the southern suburbs. So far we cant say enough about how much better it is here. Two months of very hot with 330 days per year of sun is a good trade off for 6 months of cold and gray with the other six months of dealing with flying insects and road construction.

People are friendly. On evening walks in our neighborhood people and even children smile and say hi. Food is more expensive than back home but property taxes make up for it. $2100 a year for a 3800 sq' two story. Back home it would be $8000 +-.

If you like summer time and being outdoors make the move and I gaurantee you wont be dissapointed.
