Default Mesa?

I am thinking of moving to Mesa from Tucson later this year-
I'm trying to get a better idea of what areas are good (safe)
for a single female living on her own-- I will be renting an apt.

I'm planning to drive up and visit of course,,,,but am not familiar with the area.
I'll be honest, the main reason I'm looking at Mesa is because it seems to be the most affordable area of greater Phoenix--
But how safe is it?

It would seem a nice enough area (I see there are a good amount of parks, and close to outdoor activities/ hiking areas) which I definitely like.
I really didn't want to move to metro Phoenix area (don't like the "city" feel of it)...and Mesa would seem a good choice for someone who's looking for more of "small town" feel -- but to still be close enough to Phoenix's metropolitan amenities if wanted..
Just looking for peoples opinions on quality of life in Mesa--
Thank you all!

Mesa is not really a small town anymore....I think, after Phoenix, it is the valley's most populous city...

not real familiar with Mesa, but the threads here have suggested that "west" Mesa is a bit less desirable than other parts of Mesa....it's a large suburban town, so neighborhoods will vary from block to block.....

if you're renting, you may want to visit one of those apartment rental agencies that are in some shopping centers, etc....also, of course, pick up those apartment ad magazines seen in grocery stores...

should be able to haggle and negotiate a bit as I think there are lots of rentals out there....

since you're looking for inexpensive "small town", but convenient to Phx, also try Queen Creek, Maricopa (town), Buckeye, Goodyear, and Gilbert

I would say that central Mesa is No good. East Mesa is Much better.
I would also say that Gilbert and even Chandler might be up your alley. Mesa is huge.

Being single female, depending on age group, you may want to consider Tempe too.
Affordability usually means undersirability in other criteria. Crime, safety, jobs, transportation, etc.

East Mesa is more newer and safer. Gilbert has a more town feel to parts. If cost of living is an issue, further out from PHX usually means lower rent.
