If you let us know exactly where your office is that may be helpful and folks can point you to something in reasonable distance. (Caveat: that will not be me as I am not familiar with central Phoenix.) What other things are important to you in renting?

a lot will depend on what you are looking for, but hitting that price point shouldn't be too restrictive

Lots of nice rentals in zip codes 85014, 85016, 85020 with good proximity to where you will be working. This is the north central corridor.
Don't let any real estate agents or others talk you into living way on the fringes of the Valley. There is no need and you will be stuck with a crummy commute.

Right now is a prime time to rent in Phoenix. Central Phoenix, camelback corridor and east phoenix all have a ton of rentals on the market and they are reasonably priced. There are ALOT of condos in the area. Plus, the light rail has definitely improved the downtown phoenix area. It used to be dead on the weekends but more and more great little restaurants, bars, artists etc are relocating to central phoenix, so there is always something going on.

Be very careful in 85016 - it used to be a great neighborhood but it on the fast and sad decline. Our insurance has gone up 20% because of the crime. Two of our neighbors have had their cars vehicles stolen from their driveways in broad daylight. It is really sad because East Osbourn used to be a good area but now it is VERY sketchy. Try and stay closer to Indian School and Camelback Rd.

Well, I don't know exactly. I imagine there are deals to be had, considering the housing market. I would only live in Scottsdale or Tempe. There are really nice parts of Phoenix off of Central, but I'd still prefer to only remain in the East Valley. How old are you? That will dictate my recommendation. If over 40, Scottsdale. If under 40, Tempe and even that is stretching it. The age I mean.

Well everyone Thanks for the great advice, I've found one across the street from the Phoenix country club, gated and a 1/2 mile from job. Anyone ever want to get the 411 in the DC area I'd be glad to help.
