What part of Phoenix? If your on the West side the futher out you go the more house you get for the money. If your on the east side,(were I live) It's solid all the way to Apache Junction. I live in east Mesa and work in east Phoenix and think I have the best set up. The houses in my area go between $290-325. But I can get on the fwy in 1/2 mile from home. takes me about 25 mins to get to work. Woodz

The area around Happy Valley west of I-17 is good as long as you stay north of Pinnacle Peak.

Arcadia is expensive but is well worth it. Of the different areas I lived in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area, my favorite was Arcadia. It's the only place I miss and where I have the fondest memories.

Hope it's not too late to jump in here -
Actually the express bus lines in Phoenix are better than you may imagine. Many employers in downtown Phoenix will pay or help pay your bus pass. City of Phoenix pays for all their employees who want to use the bus, including the Express Routes. The Express Routes are used almost exclusively by the professional working people who all dress well, have good maners, and make the best of the time by reading, or networking. The traffic is very bad, and the rush hour is endless. But, if you are going to work downtown Phoenix, I recommend Tempe, Awatukee, Mesa or Scottsdale. All are in the east valley, all have Express Bus service and the sun is behind you both going to work and heading home when you do have to drive. There's a lot of stress in commuting, add the work load you carry home, and then sun in your eyes, - well, you have the picture.
Unless you can find yourself enjoying the downtown lifestyle of Pheonix, it's going to be hard to find a safe and decent place to live for $200 to 300k. Be very careful when you decide where to live and look out for a lot of cars parked on the street and around the houses... that may mean there are a lot of people living in ONE house. Watch for culture clashes as well.
Good luck and welcome to Phoenix.
