I work in downtown phoenix, I live off baseline rd. in south phoenix. If i bought a house here, it would be Laveen. they are building up that area and it's soo close to downtown. Surprise & buckeye, you would hate the commute because of the traffic. Another decent area is Camelback rd in phoenix off the 51 freeway.

Default Historic Districts

There are homes out there in several historic districts that are in your stated price range. You didn't state what kind of sq footage you were looking for or if you were only intereseted in "new" homes. For today's standards many people think these homes are too small. However there are many benefits. If you are both working downtown you will save money in gas, you would be close enough to come home for lunch, and best of all the state of AZ pays half of your property taxes! There are several realtors that specialize in the historic districts. Also, prices seem to be holding up pretty well.

When you say commute, how long of commute are we talking? I guess I want a little perspective on what is considered a long commute for the Phoenix area? I am buying a home that is being built in Surprise. Lets say I end up working in Glendale. Is that a long commute? I would need to be at Glendale at 8am and would leave at 5pm.

I would consider a town home in N.Phoenix/ Cave Creek (if you can find one) etc.
