I originally was going to reply to a thread for someone in Iliinois but it was very old, 2006.

Phoenix does have a major industry, and is the same statewide - "tourism". Phoenix area is great for older folks that have problems with cold weather, like to golf, and enjoy isolated seniors housing facilities.
Arizona is cheaper than many other states, it is a "right to work" state, which is really to me "right to fire" state. There are very few unions in Arizona, big difference in comparison to other states. The average pay is lower than most states.

I am from Illinois and frequent the Chicago area. Both have crime, ornery public, bad drivers. The real estate taxes in Arizona are far cheaper where the sales tax is higher. There are no toll roads in Arizona, nor are there potholes but there are chunks of rubber off of truck tires as Arizona allows retreads, Illinois does not.

The gun laws are lenient in Arizona.
Some of the traffic laws are very outdated, such as there is not requirements for motorcycle helmets, and you can let your kids and other passengers ride in the back of your pickup truck.
It's give and take just as anywhere.

Best way to make a choice, if you aren't happy where you are then move. Making a change in itself is just sometimes the best option versus doing nothing. Find a good realtor or friends form the area to help you drive around and scope locations out to live (house, apartment, condo).

There are quite a few single females living out this way because of the universities near by.
