Oregon doesn't have a state sales tax (unless something has changed), but as far as I know it does have a property tax. States that don't have certain other taxes (like FL, that has no state income tax) tend to have HIGH property taxes.

You do need to be careful looking at apts with free utilities. There are a few that don't meet that description, but it pays to check into the surroundings.

Yeah, I've heard that too but it doesn't work for me. I tend to just buy more after dinner snacks.

We pay cash for all our groceries (as opposed to using plastic) which seems to help. It kind of gives the wasted purchases more meaning. (I can't explain it).

Where I grew up in N.C. there were taxes on food and everything I don't know about now though
