Default Phoenix Then and Now

Hello. I am curious as to how Phoenix, Arizona has differed from the past to the present. I am mostly interested in the time period between the 1950's and the 1980's. Basically, I am wanting to know how the government, population, schooling, general social life, enviroment, crime, etcetera has been affected over the years. I am doing a research project of sorts, and have been having some trouble in this area with obtaining details. Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you.

When air conditioning started in the 50’s the population of the Phoenix area started. Without it the valley would never have become what it is today. Before the 80’s the local government was unwilling to add freeway into the area because they felt it would help stop growth from happening. It wasn’t until the early 80’s that I-10 was completed through the valley and people could travel from one coast to another without having to stop at traffic lights. It’s hard to imagine that people actually had to travel on surface streets with stoplights and other traffic.

There has always been a large republican view on topics in Arizona and Phoenix, however with the movement of people coming into the area the politics has been changing to more democrats, libertarians and liberal progressives are now influencing the area.

Default pbs show on this topic

About 2 years ago, the local PBS station in Phoenix ran a show called, I believe, Phoenix Then And Now! It tracked the development of Phoenix from the 40s or 50s forward. You may want to do a google search for PBS in Phoenix and see if you can get a hold of a transcript or maybe a copy of the show!
Good luck!

I'd suggest a book by Grady Gammage called "Phoenix in Perspective." It's a good analyis of development in Phoenix, and it's written in a balanced tone from a long-term resident's point of view. Unfortunately, it's out of print, but your local library may be able to obtain a copy for you via interlibrary loan.
