student life in Tempe, AZ
Hello everyone.
I always come to this forum to read other people's comments on different cities.
Anyways I registered today because now I want to know your guys opinion on student life. Currently I live in Twin Cities, MN (for the past 5 years & grew up in Michigan). I am transferring to ASU this summer. I will be done with my degree in 2-3 years & move to different state for graduate degree (California or east coast). If you guys are wondering why not U of Minnesota (i have no problem getting in either). Well my family lives in Phoenix area, I will be close to them & dont have to pay out-of-tuition in Arizona, & tired of cold weather.
So I was wondering what kind of student life Tempe has and how do you guys walk from one building to another in such a hot weather (well I have never been to AZ in summer... soo very scared))
THANKS

I'm a long way from my student days at ASU, but I spend enough time around the campus to see that there is a lot going on, both on campus and in the surrounding area. I'm sure others will chime in.
There's actually quite a bit of shade on campus. How far you are walking from building to building will depend on what classes you are taking, but a bottle of cold water and summer clothing will take care of you.
I was in the Twin Cities during one of its hottest weeks in history in June, several years ago. The humidity there made 98 or 99 degrees seem MUCH hotter. I think you will be fine. And, you won't be trying to get to class in the snow this winter!
Welcome to ASU!

I'm also coming from MN as a college student. My girlfriends family who have lived both in the Cities and Phoenix say the hottest Phoenix day will feel like a muggy 95 degrees in MN. So if you are used to that, it shouldn't be a problem. Just wear plenty of sunscreen.

I lived in Tempe for 2 years
Downtown Tempe is must if you are a student. I recently lived off of Rio Salado and Hardy. Which is not too far from Mill ave, which is where all the bars are. There's many properties for rent in this area and many apartments for rent as well. I would try looking for homes owned by owners for rent before going to the apartments. If you are student, I wouldn't want to live any further east than Mcclintock and no further south than University. This will make it a breeze to get to and from ASU. My only issue with living in Tempe, is buying groceries. There's only two supermarkets in Tempe and that was drag. I would love to move back to Tempe when I have the chance.

How do you walk around in the summer in Phoenix you ask???...the sidewalks! LOL I know you guys have those sky bridges and covered walkways in the frigid and bitter winters in MinneSooTah, but we here brave our extremes and just wear shorts, nice thin t-shirts, and flip flops. Nothing to it, you can't lose a limb, digit, or breath from heat. Also, just make sure you stay hydrated...something that also cannot protect you from sub-freezing temps. Ugh, isn't it 11 yet! I am so ready to hit the clubs, LOL!

Two supermarkets in Tempe? Uh, no. There are not very many close to the university, that's true, but there are plenty of supermarkets.
The OP wasn't asking for advice on where to live, but since we went that route, okay. No further south than UNIVERSITY? I guess Tempe was wasting its time on the Orbit system and the bike paths. The campus extends all the way down to Apache, (and to some extent beyond). Certainly it's convenient to live as far south as Broadway, even without a car, as long as you don't go too far east or west. With a car, more options.

I agree with this, and SUNGLASSES are important because in a way if you don't have a pair in Arizona it really blurs your vision.

There is a trade off with the heat at ASU, the women walk around campus and Mill Avenue half naked.
