Default decent, cheap, safe apartment between downtown phoenix and ASU?

Hi there,

I am going to be moving to Phoenix next month for a job that will require me to commute between downtown phoenix and asu. I am looking to spend less than $650 per month for a one-bedroom apartment that allows pets. i am a female so i would prefer a place where i feel relatively safe, and i am hoping to find a place with a washer and dryer in the unit. i feel like i am searching for something that doesn't exist, but any help would be appreciated! thanks in advance.

I would look into renting somebody's 1 BR condo. So many people are trying to rent them out now. Most in the $650 range are actually okay and I bet you could negotiate your pet. And most have washer/dryers. Have you looked at Craigslist? I don't know the rental scene too much, but I saw some decent (not luxe), but clean cute apts around 7th street, South of Indian school. These were $450! And I think they took small pets. That may be a little north, but really it is pretty close to downtown and not that far from ASU. Anyway, that area is pretty safe....I'm sure someone will post with something more to your specifications.

Just remembered....one nice, inexpensive area where there are lots of condos for rent and apts is the area around Old Town Scottsdale. Might be worth your while. The area to investigate is around Indian School, east of Scottsdale Road. This is a great area, lots of shopping, galleries, coffee shops, nightlife, restaurants, pretty safe (just don't go too far south). It's about a 20 minute drive to downtown Phx, about 10 to ASU...if there is no traffic jams.

It is a renters market now. Good luck.

Twenty minutes from Old Town Scottsdale to downtown Phx during normal commuting hours? I don't think so. Ten to ASU could be a stretch, too, and with ASU you are always talking about parking and walking.

I'd second the idea of looking to rent someone's condo, though., and checking Craiglist. Up around Indian School would not be bad, but you can look further south in central Phx too. Also, there are a lot of newer apts or condos on Van Buren/Washington east of 48th St.
