My parents came out to visit in February and immediately were enamored with the valley. They'll be returning in August to experience some of the heat to make sure they continue to like it as much as they did when the weather was great.

While they were out here, they became completely fascinated with Sun City West, Surprise, and to some extent Apache Junction.

They are somewhat close to retirement age (closer to early retirement age, really) so not old enough for those "active adult" communities. Anyone have any recommendations as far as one city over the other? I never venture to Surprise or Sun City, so I'm a bit clueless in that regard. They tend to be more into relaxation and scenery. Neither of them care for golfing. Money is not a concern.

Any input I can pass along would be appreciated.

Cool Surprise

This may be biased since I live in Surprise...

I would say for a "slower" pace they should consider Surprise due to more retirement community presence.

Since they are "test-driving" the heat, you should give them the orientation of aid to summer survival here. Drinking lots of fluids, parking facing North in direct sunlight, utilizing sunshades/sunscreen when extended exposure to sunlight, etc.

Surprise. There's probably a lot more people their age so maybe they can make some friends, if they are the friendly type.

For views you really can't beat Apache Junction. But other than that it's not very nice. You might want to look at the Sun Lakes/South Chandler/Ocotillo area.
