First, rent before you buy and explore the vally. Second, it's a no brainer to live somewhere along the 51 corridor and that's not really Scottsdale...it's phoenix. There are older homes on huge lots with very friendly people and probably the most central location in all of the valley. Taking the 51 downtown every morning is far and away better than ever driving on the 10 or 202 (granted you have to jump on to the 10 for an exit or two from the 51). Don't also forget the west side of the 51, Moon Valley and other parts of Phoenix (even Desert Ridge)....great middle class and upper middle class homes.

Taking up that last thought.... there are some lovely older homes in the area immediately west of the 51, north of Bethany. Large lots, big trees, nice neighborhoods.

Oh man, this thread. If the OP is still looking, or if anyone else wonders about commute times, it still only takes me 15 minutes to get to the 51/I-10 interchange from my home. In the past few months, it has taken longer only twice - once it rained (haha) and the other time they had all lanes shut down for an unclear reason (this was last week).

If it isn't too late... I have lived all over the valley and We moved to Ahwatukee in Dec of 2008. It is the absolute best area with all aspects of community living, great schools, close commutes, and the expectations that Scottsdale has will leave you wanting more. If you would like to discuss these areas further let me know. Moderator cut: no RE advertising allowed
