My recent trip to Seattle left me craving authentic Asian food. I've been to a lot of American-ized restaurants as well as grease pits, but can't seem to find anything quite like what I've had in other states. Does anyone have any suggestions? So far Abacus Inn on 59th and Beardsley is my favorite... oh wait, the package of Mandarin Orange Chicken from Trader Joe's tops that!

There are plenty of good options -- probably not as many as in Seattle, but certainly enough. The biggest cluster of authentic Asian restaurants is in the East Valley, especially along Dobson Road in Mesa and Chandler. I don't know of that much in the NW Valley, but I've heard of a few options along Bell Road, including Line Thai, and Avina's (Vietnamese). Use Google Maps for exact locations.
For more in-depth recommendations: You can get a lot of local food tips at http://www.chowhound.com/boards/6, which is solely devoted to dining out. You may also want to check the restaurant reviews at http://www.azcentral.com/ent/dining/ and http://restaurants.phoenixnewtimes.com/ At the latter site, the New Times just published a review of a Vietnamese restaurant in Mesa that sounds delicious. I love Chinese food--here are a few suggestions if you are looking for good, authentic Chinese food in the Phoenix area--approved by my landlady who is 100% authentic Chinese herself!
1. Great Wall Cuisine, 3446 W. Camelback Road, Phoenix. Excellent, real Chinese food. 2. Szechwan Palace, 668 N. 44th Street #4, Phoenix. In the COFCO Chinese Cultural Center. If you like really spicy... 3. China King Buffet, 1050 W. Ray Road, Chandler. OK, not Phoenix, but maybe the best dim-sum you can find around here. And their main dishes are delicious too. |

That's one of the biggest things I miss about Denver-- there is no Tokyo Joes here. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, it's a fast-casual "Japanese"-style bowl/ California roll chain. Ok, I guess it's not "authentic" asian food, but it is really healthy and delicious food. Pei wei is okay, but for me it's starting to get old fast. Kyoto HOLE tastes like dog food and Samurai Sam's is either always burnt or undercooked. Is there any good rice-bowl style place in the valley?

I reccomend Zang Asian Bistro in downtown Glendale. Really good food, the service is a bit iffy. They always seem understaffed. But the food was really quite good.
Asian food from all over Asia! (58th Drive & Glendale for those wondering) |

Thanks so much for your suggestions. Even sadlebaby... but I have to say that I think this falls into the "greasy" category.
My father-in-law would be right there with you! |

Chandler (East side of the valley) has a (very small) Asian town like section at Dobson and Warner. There are a few authentic restaurants, as well as a huge authentic style Asian (as well as other nationalities) grocery store called Lee Lee. In the same parking lot is a buffet called Phoenix Palace (I think?) that has a huge selection of Asian food, as well as a BBQ section.

This is my specialty I love Asian Food. Abacus is on 59th and Thunderbird or did they move? They also have one in Ahwatukee. If you are on the North side check out this hole in the wall place on 51st Ave and Olive. It's on the North west side of the street in the little strip mall in the Frys Plaza. I can't remember the name it's been awhile. If you are in The Chandler, South Tempe area check out Neo Tokyo, Ray and 48th Street. You will think you did and went to heaven when you taste their Orange Chicken. It is a cut above. This place is a must!! If you are around the Biltmore area check out Jimmy's. I think they are off of Camelback and 16th street. You can look it up. Dobson and Main has a pretty good little cheap place called Golden Canyon on Southern and Dobson. Not a fantastic place but decent and priced right and a pretty good atmosphere inside. If you want a good buffet Chandler Blvd and 48th street is the place. The Hong Kong Buffet. They also have all can eat made to order Sushi included in the buffet price. I think Dinner is 14.95 and lunch is like 7.95. Someone mentioned The Kings Buffet it's decent but this one is really good and the Sushi is great! Try some of those and report back ![]() |
