I grew up in the East Valley and lived in central Phoenix for a few years. I wouldn't say I hate it, but I am glad I left. I think the one thing that I hated the most was the uncontrolled urban sprawl. Growing up in west Mesa in the 80's, there were still some orange groves and even a cotton field or two. By the mid 80's that was all gone. But what really was the worst was how in the late 90's/early 2000's, it just blossomed out into the middle of everywhere! I remember going dove hunting labor day weekend and then comming back to the same spot the next year and find 1000 houses. I used to love driving out to Peralta Trailhead to do some hiking. Last time I was out there it seems there were houses all the way up to the Superstitions. Is Don's Base Camp still there or did that go for more luxury homes? Also, people arn't as community minded as they used to be, it seems. Alot of it seems to come from the transient nature of the valley. People just dont seem to make it home to them, just a place to live untill they finish school, change jobs, or go home after the winter.

I hate the fact that Phoenix is such an easy place to live. I hate the over abundance of friendly, smiling sociable people. I blame it on that awful sunshine. I hate the way I feel completely at ease and at home wherever I go in the Valley. It is just terrible!

I can't wait to go back to the midwest. Sure times are a little rough there, but it won't stay that way forever. Also looking forward to some sense of community. All i see in Phoenix is a get rich quick mentality, and zero sense of community. No one really cares about Phoenix, including me. Oh and by the way, when the area runs out of water in 20 years, don't come crying to me....told ya so.
