I'm going to bed, and I hope that others who visit this thread look at the links I provided as they offer some insight as to the viability of Arizona schools. Giving up and throwing in the towel is never an option and those who are dedicated to making Arizona a better place will know that not everyone starts at number one. So movin'on, say what you will, but Arizona and Phoenix have many amazing things to offer and will continue to improve. Ad homs? Ugh! Whatever, I could "engage" you in five different langauges (English, Spanish, German, Japanese, and Latin) some of which I learned in those great schools I attended, however, the Suns play in roughly 7 hours and I must watch!

That, and you have no family here, your house is paid for. Why do you stay here? Having a paid up house close to Filibertos is a reason TO leave, not an excuse to stay. You could sell, take your money and rent a place on the interest alone anywhere you want. There are so many people here and in other cities and towns who are stuck - stuck with parents or in-laws, stuck with teens in school, stuck with a mortgage, stuck with health issues, stuck with financial realities - who would envy your relative freedom and seize the opportunity you have to alter their circumstances. You needn't explain yourself; it's none of my business really. I am just befuddled at your posts.
Thank you. I appreciate this. It's more complicated than I've alluded to. There are factors that keep me here, even though you might not understand them. Some of us are just stuck. It's really not that easy at a certain point to get up and leave. It requires a tremendous amount of energy, and I just haven't had it. One day, I hope I will. Like I said, there are other issues...

Where did this happen? 19TH Ave and Bell during broad daylight? I'd be pissed to. I try to avoid the avenues, at all costs. There seem to be a disproportionate number of bad things out that way compared to where I live. I stay in my own neighborhood, as much as I can.

I just google mapped that intersection and it looks really cruddy.

I'm just curious, what kind of car was your son in? were his windows open at the time?

You don't have to provide me with info but I'm just curious.

I am one to stay in my own neighborhood aswell, but I wouldn't let fear hold me back.. that's no way to live. But I have been thinking about getting a .38 and a license to carry if I were to drive cross town. But even that to me is an extreme thought.

Furthermore, I did not only list clubs in the above post. Anyone else have a problem with my grammar or spelling? LOL
Here's a site that ranks all things America called StateMaster: Education
Arizona is NOT first in education. Not even close. Well except maybe drop out rates.....
But with that said, there are some schools within the university system in AZ that have very good reputations. My biggest concern is the elementary, middle and high schools because that is the basis for all education. The AZ schools don't even require you to graduate with enough credits to go out of state for college. You have to have foresight to know that on your own (we did) but how dumb is that? The high schools should at least prepare all students to be able to go to any university, not just an AZ one. But there are good high schools scattered here and there, you just have to do your homework. And if the school has an IB Program -get involved, it is the best thing for your child! My daughter did it and she received scholarships at all her colleges she applied to and let me tell you, they were tough ones at that. (NYU, Rochester, Brown etc.)

Looks like there were tons of answers to this one and Im not sure if I already answered but will toss in my reply.
I dont 'hate' Phoenix, but its just not home for me. Ive lived there and in a few cities near there, and its just not the same. Way too many people, many who are rude and 'above' everyone else. Im just a small town, good ol' country girl.

Yes, there are a lot of people here. And the traffic is really starting to get on my nerves.

I'm thinking...small town with tall pine trees and a local diner where you can go for breakfast and even say hello to a few people you know. Fresh clean air, a beach nearby. I feel like that would be heaven right now. For what I haven't earned in income here, I could have been living that life for the past four years. There is always the job thing, but man I would love to be eating eggs and pancakes in a town like that, right now! Maybe throw in some hashbrowns and a walk on the beach. Gosh, just typing this makes me smile

We went to a small town diner awhile back for breakfast where the server asked me how I would like my 'cackleberries'. I had to ask her 'what???' She asked again how I wanted my 'cackleberries'....she meant 'eggs'! Talk about hick town vocab, lol. We loved it though. Try using that type of lingo in Phoenix, or Scottsdale, or N.Y.C. or L.A. though.

I think movin'on really captures the essence here of plurality. I have that kind of atmosphere right now - and I hate it! I hate going to a Borders and having the clerks know me by name, having the bartenders know what drinks I like, having to say hi to people in line at the post office, wondering if my HS students are gossiping what beer I buy at the check-out line. Bloomington is a highly educated (overly educated) Mayberry. I am so ready to go to a city that is sprawled out and expansive with anonymity. The straw for me was having surgery earlier this year and having one of my current students be my nurse who prepped me for surgery - getting a good look at "my stuff downthere" as she shaved me. That's just pushing it for small town familiarity for me. But...if that's what movin'on wants and I don't , so be it! Whatever floats your boat, right!?
