Yeah, movin'on.. it has less to do about Phoenix as it is your personal taste. Simple as that.

Bloomington is a highly educated (overly educated) Mayberry. I am so ready to go to a city that is sprawled out and expansive with anonymity. The straw for me was having surgery earlier this year and having one of my current students be my nurse who prepped me for surgery - getting a good look at "my stuff downthere" as she shaved me. That's just pushing it for small town familiarity for me. But...if that's what movin'on wants and I don't , so be it! Whatever floats your boat, right!?
Hmmm, well, I have never actually lived in a small town, except for one in Spain (maybe 20,000 back then). But this probably was different, as I stuck out like a sore thumb, so...maybe I don't have a good idea of what small town living is really like. I didn't realize that Bloomington qualifies as small down status though.

I think I'd like some of the things you mentioned, minus the gossipy part and the surgery part I am really tired of the big, sprawling sort of stuff. When I lived in SF, one was even able to get some sense of "small town" stuff, as neighborhoods were distinct and there was a different flavor to each of them.

Maybe I'm just tired of busy roads and endless sunshine and lack of a sense of community and having to drive so far to get from point a to point b and nothing to do for fun (the types of things I consider fun). So, I am really going to give the political activism angle a shot here. I've been meaning to do that for quite some time. Maybe I'll like it more here if I do that.

I still think my fantasy image above is a great one, however!

To an extent, but that goes for everyone who either loves or hates this place. I think what I've described that bugs me the most is true. It really IS possible to get tired of sunshine, DAY AFTER DAY. The freeways here really are harrowing to drive on. Even the surface streets are filled with traffic and seem to be zooming along. I'd like a street where 30 mph is the norm. There is a strip mall on just about every corner. It does take a long time to get from one point to the other. There really isn't much here to do, IMHO, or at least the kinds of things I like to do. And blah blah blah. I am not dissing all of AZ, as it is nice up north - just Phoenix.

You could always live in Chicago... Yikes
abc7chicago.com: 31 people shot over weekend, at least 6 killed 4/20/08

You aren't dissing Phoenix at all though movin'on.. you're stating your personal taste and why Phoenix isn't for you.

You sound like you may enjoy Vermont.. lol

I dont 'hate' Phoenix, but its just not home for me. Ive lived there and in a few cities near there, and its just not the same. Way too many people, many who are rude and 'above' everyone else. Im just a small town, good ol' country girl.
I agree with the "above everyone else" statement. That is what has driven me from the state also. Mind you, it wasn't always like that...

You hit the nail right on the head. It's all relative. One man's trash is another man's treasure. It all depends on what you are looking for at this particular time of your life.

Pardon me for asking, but why on earth does anyone in this state have a reason to be "above everyone else?"

When I express my intense dislike for this place, it's my dislike. Maybe some people like packed freeways, blazing heat, and nothing to do, but that doesn't translate into my being above everyone else.

It just means some people have not experienced the kinds of places to compare this place with. It is all relative, and where I came from outshines this place, so of course I am not going to be satisfied here.

Home is where the heart is.........

You have made it abundantly clear that you do not care for the Phx area.

That stated: why do you even bother posting on the Phoenix board?

When I moved to California 30 years ago (fleeing Wash DC); it was to the SF Bay area......1981 saw me ensconced in SoCal. By 1989 I arrived here in Arizona.

Simple, it's cathartic. Plus, unless I am incorrect, this is a thread entitled Why I hate Phoenix. Do I not belong here, or is this thread just dedicated to those who love Phoenix? Maybe this thread should be renamed, in which case I will not participate. BTW, whatever happened to 1st amendment rights? Arizonans are supposed to be big on this, what with being the Wild West and all. I am sorry if I cause cognitive dissonance, as a result of my exercising said 1st amendment rights.

Maybe I'm missing something here and you can explain.

Or maybe it's actually useful to have divergent opinions? Again, the thread should be renamed if the only input welcomed is that in favor of Phoenix.

Oh, and BTW, I just happen to live here, so it makes sense for me to post in a Phoenix forum, don't you agree?

movin'on.. my friend.. you need to understand the difference between being constructive about Phoenix and posting your opinion as to why Phoenix doesn't fit your lifestyle..

Nothing to do? Wrong.. there's nothing to do that you like. That's a big difference.

The way you're taking about people in Phoenix acting above everyone else, you're doing the same thing pal, except you're acting above everyone else who enjoys what Phoenix has to offer.

Time to either move on, or get off your own personal high horse.
