I sure as H would not have moved here, had I had my wits about me. Unless you like boring and hot, stay back there. Sorry! I've lived in San Diego, San Francisco, Portland, Minneapolis and Scottsdale. Unless you can buy a house here scot free (no pun intended), I'd never come here and this *is* the truth.
I've been asked what brought me here. I always say mental illness. I get funny looks, but it's the truth. Why leave better areas for worse areas?

Yup, it *is* one of my better traits. I am no yay-rah-rah cheerleader for this town. I call it like I see it. Made too many mistakes to do otherwise, and would like to prevent others from doing the same. BTW, I did buy the house scot free. It's what keeps me here - that and a sh*t economy thanks to those in this town who supported the past regime. Oh, and the rest of the country - but even that is questionable. But I do digress...in short, I do not fit in here.

Speaking as an RN who has been looking at job opportunities in the Phoenix area due to my husband's impending transfer there, I can say that yes, there are nursing jobs in Phoenix. I don't think that they are as abundant as a lot of people think they are, though. It's not like every hospital in the Valley is begging for nurses to fill scores of empty positions, in fact, if you go to Monster.com, the John C. Lincoln Healthcare system has several positions posted with the following disclaimer: "No openings, waiting list only". To me, that means that you won't get a job right now, but that you can get on a waiting list for if and when they fill that position.
I have been an RN for 19 years. When I first graduated from nursing school, I could literally choose which hospital I wanted to work for, and they were all offering nice sign-on bonuses to entice nurses to work for them. THAT is a great job market for nursing. Based on what I have seen on the various hospital websites and job search websites for the Phoenix area, it isn't nearly that good right now. So while there may be nursing jobs, I don't think that it's the hotbed of nurse hiring that a lot of people think it is. I think (hope!) that as the baby boomers progress into their sixties and then into their seventies, more and more nursing jobs will open up. However, the face of healthcare is changing rapidly too, with fewer and fewer hospital inpatient stays and more and more procedures being done on an outpatient basis. Of course, that is another topic altogether. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out...

Because you have poor mental health does not mean all that move here do.
I do feel bad for you because you keep posting about how you hate it here. My advice, and alot of others, for quite a time is MOVE.

I've become persuaded that this sad individual has found her niche--to live in a place she hates, and to complain about it incessantly on the local chatboard. If she actually "moved on", she would probably be even more miserable.
It's like being stuck in a bad marriage that just goes on and on. You keep wishing they'd just split up, but they seem to need the misery.
Sad.

Jobs are very hard to come by right now out here, people who made $60k a year are getting laid off, and are being forced to take jobs like retail, and unfortunately since they are more "experienced" it's a lot harder to get a job being 20ish.
As for living, I would recommend Old Town Scottsdale if you can afford it, which I am doubting. You would be better of living near Tempe.

Seriously, are you telling her there is no ghetto here? It doesn't look the same, but it's the hood.
If your job is in Tempe, you should stay in the Tempe area. The ASU area has some good nightlife, *affordable* clubs, not scottsdale prices, and you could probably bike or take the bus to work. Parking will be a challenge, but if you grew up in Philly you're used to that.
Unemployment rate is not much different. I respectfully disagree with the poster who said Philly is worse. In fact, I think when the 2nd quarter stats come out, we will be winning that race. Sadly.
I hope that you can trust your employer. I know people who have sold houses on the east coast, moved their families out here, only to come out and be told the company closed the office in Phx.
You'll hate the months of July and August, but you'll be laughing at your friends back east in February. I unfortunately have to eat those words as I'm heading back to where you're leaving in 2 weeks.
It's the young 20's that are going to rebuild the economy. C'mon out. If you like the outdoors, it's a great place to be for 10 months out of the year. I have hiked and biked more in the past 4 years than I did my entire previous 38 back east.
Good luck.
