You don't know that. It was sitting right next to another two letter state code (NV). And Louisiana crime statistics would be high...

I wouldn't think they would be the second highest in the country, though. I assumed the poster meant Los Angeles. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong.

Don't worry I did too! But I think she meant LA, as in the state. However, she is wrong either way Arizona is not the third most dangerous state. She is a troll plain and simple.

ROFL. Well, thank you all-- both for the great info for apartment searching... and for a highly amusing thread. I know we've run through various topics but I thought I'd clarify a few things:
1) Not actually using PDX as my basis for "city." I actually live in Corvallis right now, which is quite a hike away from Portland, and I actually lived in Bay Area California before, so I'm not opposed to driving in general (and Lux's espresso is better than most I've had even in the Pacific NW). But my new work place is RIGHT off of the lightrail, so that could be super convenient...
2) I actually am going to search for apartments in person. But this thread has helped me a LOT in compiling a "to look at" list.
3) Dude, if Arizona is the hird most dangerous state in the country, I'll eat my hat. Haha!
Seriously, thanks all-- especially with some new info about Tempe. I have some good friends from Tuscon who concurred on the "frat" tone of many of those areas, but we'll see in our search.
Thanks all!

Corvallis is my home town! I've lived here a LONG time, but spent a lot of summers there as a kid. Good luck in finding just the right place.

hmm trudawg....i "can say" what I said b/c I chose to not go out alone when I lived there, not implying the OP should follow my lead; if you can't understand what I said I will simplify: "When I lived there, I wouldn't go out alone after dark except on D-backs game nights". If I wanted to say, "if I were you, avoid going out alone after dark except on D-backs game nights" I would have said that.

downtown phx is nice but it's in a bubble and to get there u have to go thru yucky places. It's also surrounded by places where I would lock my car doors and carry some sort of a weapon. It's all about being smart and not going to places at the wrong time.
People are so afraid of downtown but they haven't lived in any east coast cities apparently :P I am from Hartford, CT Hartford and New Haven, CT make phx look like paradise

You don't have to go through "yucky places" from every direction, so no, it's not surrounded by them, or by places one would need to lock car doors or carry a weapon. Let's be honest, too, we lock car doors pretty much everywhere in metro Phx )
You are right about people not realizing that downtown Phx (and even some of the nearby "yucky parts" ) are fairly tame compared to other cities.
